39-2 Still in the box; Value ???

Came across a 39-2 .... still in the box ..... unfired.

Two magazines, Box and Docs. , but no cleaning kit.

Original grips are missing but it's wearing a set of bonded Ivory.

With the world today...... value is fluid......... what range of value does the hive place on a gun like this??????

For me over the years 39s have come and gone........ always seem to miss not having one ....... but have 3913/14s for shooting.

About a year and a half ago I bought an almost ANIB 39-2 from my favorite LGS for $285. I say "almost ANIB" because the original owner had stenciled his drivers license number onto the frame. Otherwise, I figure it would have been worth about double what I paid.

LOL..... yesterday Pa.'s insta-check system was "out of order" or "overwhelmed" for at least 3 hours....just a busy signal for 3 hours...so no handgun sales in Pa........ on Sept. 1st 2016...............

the running joke as the owner of the LGS kept hitting speed dial ...... was the "panic run on guns has started".

What I'd really like to find is a 639 with fixed sights.........

Buy it, replace the grips if that is important to you. No tools, try Harbor Freight. As an aside, do you think that insta-check would work better if dealers could call NCIC in PA.

South of $570. $480-$520? I would be looking and talking to the owner.
NIB Mod-39s are still floating around, not like they use to. The grips are not a deal killer. Best.

Was planning to....... I found a set of wood factory grips and an old lined Bianchi 19L holster in my "stash of stuff"..........got the makings of a nice Texas BBQ rig.........

A few months ago I bought a 39-2 in excellent condition with 2x8 rd original factory mags at a local gun show for $350 out the door.

No box,papers are cleaning kit

It was in a new blue plastic S&W case

More recently I bought a NIB Model 59 with the 2 original 14rd mags,kit and papers for $525 and a 85%-90% 5904 with one original 15 rd mag for $240

There's a NIB 559 locally that I have an eye on but the 559 is a bit heavy compared to the 39-2,59 and 5904

Around my parts, a really nice ("as-new" or very close) Model 39-2 starts at $499 whether it comes with the original box or not. $599 would not be unusual at all for as-new in original box.

Sight unseen, I have no idea how much the ivory grips would add. I imagine style and condition would be very important with regard to value. I'd probably be happier if it just came with a really nice condition matched set of original wood grips.

If the asking price is "well south of $570", I'm thinking that you're already in "good buy" territory.

Stakeout,isnt your 5904 carbon steel.? A 559 should weigh about the same.
I wonder a lot about the few complaints I hear about weight when the 659 is the subject.

if you can get a copy of "The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson" 3rd ed........(4th coming out soon)...........as a reference .......

I bought one in great condition earlier this year for $420. The asking price was $450. Nothing came with it but the gun. The gun had barely any wear.

The first box of ammo I ran through it put more wear on the moving parts that it had when I bought it.

Edited to add that every 39-2 I've seen for sale since then has has considerable more wear or was $50 to $100 more expensive.

If truly un-fired in 100% condition, w/box, docs and no tools, then MAYBE $500. And personally I'd have to change out the stocks even if they are ivory. And that would probably be another $50 or more out of my pocket.

The Md 39 is iconic and historic and I hope you can get this one at a good price. But S&W made tons of them. Good luck.

What did you do to improve (slightly modify) your 39-2?

In the late 70's, early 80s I filed a dovetail in the front sight and fit a colored insert. I traded the gun at a later time. About 20 years later, it came back to me.

Question about Model 39 barrel

I'm new to the forum, so please bear with me if I mess up. A few years ago I bought a 39-2 from someone, no box or papers, in really good shape. The only question I had about it was it had a five inch barrel on it, so it protruded another inch past the bushing. It appears to be stainless, and has the "9 mm" markings on the top. I have looked in the S&W catalog and can't find anywhere a 39 was made with a barrel this length. I never shot it, but it appears to function fine. Any ideas would be most appreciated!
