3906 Price and Availability

I had a 3906....but years ago I let it go (As my old friend from Mobile would say, "D U M") I want it back. Well, maybe not the one I owned...but a 3906.

I've got a 59 and 5906 and a 39-2 and would like the 3906 to bookend the line.

So how hard am I going to have to look and how much will my years-ago stupidity cost me.

A quick GB completed items search revealed 4 sales.
1 @ $535, 1 @ $573, 1 @ $580, and 1 @ $1000 (?)

I saw 2 currently listed on GB so you wouldn't need to look very long.

On Gunbroker, the 3906 seems to be "feast or famine." I have seen long stretches where none were listed (multiple months) but JohnHL is right on the mark -- a number of them have appeared lately.

There are at least three and perhaps four different sight options across 3906 models. The big adjustable rear sight version, the Novak fixed rear sight and the old-school 2nd Gen pre-Novak fixed rear sight.

I say "possibly four" as I happen to own a Novak night sight 3906. I don't know if S&W offered this configuration or if it was simply a fixed Novak rear that was swapped out.

I'd say you can and will find one -- set aside $500-$700 to be safe. If you need or expect mint/original box, expect the price to approach the stupid.

Just so we are clear

Here's a quick pic of mine I picked up at a pawnshop in 2015 (has it been that long?) for $455. I picked up two extra mags at a gunshow. I thought the price was a tad high at the time, but happy I got it.

As Sevens pointed out, you sometimes need to be patient to snag a 3906 at an affordable price. Being on Gunbroker helps, and JohnHL was right that there are currently 2 fixed sight models for sale, one of them with the later production Novak sights. Prices can be all over the place, but in general I think that under $600 would be fair. The ones I see for sale higher than that don't tend to sell very well (there was one up for sale for over a year at the $1000 mark).

Sometimes it's all about perspective, and a brief moment in time can skew a perspective. A very recent example of what I mean is the one-barrel only Super 9 listed on Gunbroker that ended Sunday night at a price -OVER- $3,500.

When that sort of thing happens... it makes me wanna soften my "hard line" stance on what I think a scarce production gun such as a 3906 "should" sell for.

I find the market very interesting, let's put it that way.

Just what I'm shooting for (groan).

I've got a 5906 and a 6906, am negotiating a local trade for a 3913...and really want that 3906. I guess I'm going to have to up my ante and lay aside $550 or so....instead of the $450 I was hoping to spend. I'll keep looking.
