I have just observed 4 straight scratch lines on the barrel of my 3913 when it is viewed from the ejection port. Further examination revealed a burr or raised area in one of the shallow grooves underneath the slide with the barrel removed. I am thinking the burr is making the scratch lines when the pistol is fired. Would it harm or mess with the alignment of the slide and the barrel if I try to smooth the burr down or should I leave well enough alone. What would be a good method to smooth off the burr? I purchased the 3913 used and have only fired a few hundred rounds through it and just now noticing the scratches.

From your post I would say that you seem to be unfamiliar with firearms. To me that would indicate that you should take the weapon to a gunsmith and have him take a look at it.

The cost would be minimal but the peace of mind invaluable.

Scratches on a barrel is normal. Unless it is digging out gouges in which case it probably wouldn't operate correctly.
There is not a gun owner that has a fired auto without barrel scratches.

If I'm reading your post correctly, you are not describing 'smilies'. The normal scratches seen on every auto barrel. My custom 952 had simular scratches from a noticable burr inside the slide. I called CS and had it shipped for repair. They cleaned/smoothed/milled the burr away and the scratches were eliminated.

That's right I was not describing smilies but 3 or 4 similar horizontal scratches on the barrel which you can see through the slide cutout. Evidently I did not describe the problem adequately but JR60 and gatorhugger I understood my post. I don't think the scratches are affecting the mechanics of the pistol but if the inside of the slide which appears rough was smooth off it would fix the problem. Thanks everyone for the advise.
