3914DAO from WisconsinTransfers came in

The 3954 and the 3914 are not the same gun. The 3953/34 are what I refer to as "true" DAO guns. They do not feature second strike capability. The 3914 was made by removing the single action cocking notch on the hammer. That is why they will work in double action and allow for multiple trigger pulls without cycling the slide.

NYPD never actually issued off duty guns. They wrote the specifications and specified guns that met them and could be purchased for off duty use. At some point, which was likely well after most other 3rd Gen gun production stopped, they removed them from the authorized list. Officers who owned them were allowed to keep them, but they could no longer be purchased.

From what the person I bought mine from, it's common among departments in the greater NYC area to do that. He went from NYPD to another department in a different county and had to buy a different off duty gun as they didn't certify the 3914DAO. Which was fortunate for me.

As to serial numbers, they are not alphabetical in order. You can find a 457 with a BAYxxxx serial number that was made after 2000. And so on. Only S&W knows why and how they issue serial numbers.

Any idea when NYPD stopped issuing them? From above this seems to be 2002 production unless I've read wrong.

Also well past the typical U-based serials that seemed to match NYPD.
As far as I can tell, both 5946 and 3914DAO were produced for NYPD up thru at least 2013. I believe there was a previous post somewhere back in time with a list of Approved NYPD pistols which changed over time. I assume they were delisted and replaced by the lighter "plastic" pistols.

The Product Code 149332 NYPD spec 5946 included UCK (2011) and UCU (2013) which appear to be routine production - I have a Holton UCU97xx dated by SW as 3/22/2013 and confirmed by Roy to be "a major NY Police Dept".

They seem to stop in 2013 with none made in 2014, but with additional UCV and UCW prefix Houlton marked pistols (dated 2015-16) surplussed. The 5946 production continued with UCY pistols produced with indented S/N on Right but with Springfield markings in 2016 (presumably surplussed?)

The Product Code 103922 NYPD spec 3914DAO included UCS and UCT (2012) and UCU (12/2012 & 1/2013 per SW). These appear to be routine production concurrent with other Houlton production (primarily 3914DAO, 3953TSW, 4566TSW, 5946, but with an odd 5904 and a 5906 I stumbled upon).

The UCV and UCW prefixes (2015-16) 3914DAOs appear to be mixed Houlton and Springfield markings with INDENTED right side S/N and appear to have been surplussed. The 3914DAO production also continued 2015-17 with Springfield markings but NON-INDENTED UCZ s/n markings STILL ON RIGHT side of frame. The quantity of 3914DAO made with Springfield markings is unknown but appears to be mostly UCZ62xx serial numbers (5 of 6 observed UCZ 6209-6256). At least 83 3914DAO were sold to Lipseys in Baton Rouge, La in October 2017

Interestingly in the same 2013 time frame Houlton was producing melonite 4566TSW for WV State Police and WV Public Safety (Product Code 150933) in the UCU series in 2013-14 and what appear to be surplussed Houlton marked 3953TSW (Product Code 404541) in the UCV series in 2013-2015.

Wasn't this about the time Smith was trying hard to move away from the 3rd gens and into the polymer world?
I believe SW discontinued 3rd generations from their catalogs around 2003 but they would continue to manufacture 3rd gen pistols to specific Purchase Orders in Minimum Quantities (mostly LE contracts) thru 2013 or possibly later.

In the title: WisconsinTransfers. They're sold out (and listed at $299 now, not $249).
Well, I saw that in title , but had trouble finding them on the internet.

Thanks

I sure would order one for those prices.

As far as I know, NYPD does not and never has (at least in recent times) issued sidearms. They have an approved list and officers buy from that that list at the NYPD equipment section. Mr. Vivas can give a real expert's answer.

As I understood it NYPD purchased pistols on the Approved list (presumably at a good price) and the Officers selected and purchased from NYPD. 5946 Approved for On Duty carry, 3914DAO for Off Duty. Not sure about Detectives, Senior Officers, but last thing an Undercover would want is a NYPD unique weapon telltale.

About few years ago Bass Pro Shops (or Cabelas? ) had NIB S&W 5946 from NYPD for sale. I wanted to buy one...... but with the 15 round hi-cap magazines, they were not legal for sale in Massachusetts. (ironic because they were built here).
I think they were $699?
