First it was a lightly used 4006, followed 6 weeks later by a nice 4516-1. Thought I was done, now I am looking at a 1006 with adjustable sights and less 100 rounds through it. Is there a cure? Pics to follow if it follows me home.

Unfortunately the only known cure at this time is to buy another one, and currently it's a temporary cure at best. Enjoy!

BTW - If you want to add a 9mm to the family, check out CDNN investments for the 5906 and 6906, both police trade in guns that can be had in great condition for under $400.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I really need to rein in this behavior for a while.

It's not an addiction, it's an obsession. I feel like I missed out on the 80's and 90's.

Picked up a Model 59 LNIB a few months ago myself. The 3rd gen are probably the most underappreciated guns ever made. I have owned numerous and they were reliable and excellent. The best part is some great examples can be had for around $500.

It's not an obsession it's a great investment strategy:D:D I picked up my 1st 3rd gen in January. A 5906. Then a 4506-1, then a 3913, then a 3913NL, then a 1086 and then a 910.. The 910 was yesterday....plus (2) 2nd gen examples and (3) 1st gen examples...We say examples because it sounds sophisticated and investment like:rolleyes::rolleyes: That's 11 in 6 months.. so you are just warming up:)

That is what I keep saying to myself that I could sell and even make money on the ones I've purchased. No way I would sell any 2nd and 3rd generation since they are the finest and best looking pistols.

I held a 4506 for the first time the other day at a local gun shop and I loved it. I can't buy it yet since I'm only 20 but I hope that is my first handgun. Some people think it's too big and heavy (including the clerk) but it just felt right in my hands. There was a m&p 9mm right by it and it felt like a toy and was too small for my hand.

Karambit, ive CC'ed a 4506 before. Its much easier than the naysayers would have you believe. Ive carried it and a 1911 before, and truth be told they both handle the same.

As far as my "addiction" is concerned, well ill let the late Amy Winehouse sing it for me:

They tried to make me go to rehab, but I said no, no, no
Yes ive tried a Glock, but I sold it back ya know, know , know.
I aint got the time, and my credit card is fine.
Gaston's tried to make me go but no, no, no.

If thats too pop culture for some of ya, ill have Luther Ingram sing it too ....

If lovin' you is analog, I don't wanna be tactical.
If being high-speed means bein' without you.
I'd rather live a wrong with a 5906 for life.
Magpul and Front Sight say its a shame.......

The problem is that just like other addictions it takes ever increasing amounts to satisfy your cravings. A month ago I sold my M&P9c and used the money to buy a 3913. I told myself that five 3rd gen 9mm and one .45 were enough. Yeah right, now I'm thinking just one DAO in 9mm would be nice.

It just never ends.

Hi my name is Chris and I'm a 3rd gen-aholic.

Honestly, I just own one right now, a 6906. I am currently in the hunt for a 3913NL (or LS) right now. After that I'd like to find one of the CS45s, but I am willing to bet it would be nigh impossible.

My one concern is that I want to shoot and/or carry the guns I buy. So I was wondering if any of my fellow "3gens Anonymous" addicts have any advice about the situation of getting one fixed? Of course they're wonderfully reliable (part of our love, right?), but with shooting things are going to wear down and need to be replaced, even if nothing "breaks". What are the chances that in 5 years I can't get a 3913 worked on? Will S&W still be able to repair it for me or will there be parts I can order? Would a local gunsmith be able to do it?

The reason I ask is because I did see another thread where people were talking about the unavailability of parts for the 3rd Gens already now. So many people are saying to buy two and use one as a parts gun, but I can't really afford that policy. I saw a different thread where a guy apparently sent a Model 39 (2nd gen?) in for repair and it only cost about 100 bucks! I'd be willing to pay 100 bucks to get a my 6906 or a 3913 (if i find one) fixed if it ever came down to that.

What say you gentlemen? Should I assume that I'd never be able to fix it and try to cure my addictions with an M&P, or rely on S&W to be able to fix something "old" if it breaks or has normal wear and tear?

Well the owner of the 1006 that I hoped to buy has had a change of heart. Seems the 3rd Gen addiction had its hooks in deep and he couldn't bring himself to sell. Oh well:(

Its actually one of the reasons I like 3rd Generation Smiths.S&W still stands by their product no matter how old it is, as the cases of people sending in their 30 and 40 year old Model 39s for service prove. In addition a handful of Law Enforcement agencies still use these guns for duty useage, so I doubt the factory support channel is going to shut down anytime soon for these weapons.

Yep,I understand all the above comments, just purchased a 4506-1 last week, used excellent w/ 2 mags for 4 bills out of the door. Today, it was a 915 used excellent for 3 bills out of the door. These designs were considered,(and still are) superb in the 90's and they are ultra reliable. Now if I can just go back in time and get back that model 59 factory nickled in pristine condition I stupidly traded off for what,I can't even remember!!!!

I totally agree, 10mm is awesome if a bit hard to find. But there has to be a trade off somewhere right?
I think for my first gun it will be the 4506 or 4006, just depends on what is available next year. Around here 40 is a little less expensive but I want to start reloading so it shouldn't be a big deal.

4506-1

I have a 4506-1 SN THC4XXX that is in excellent condition with 2 S&W 8 round mags. I've owned this piece for nearl15 years and have fired it only 15-20 times. Since it was used when I acquired it I can't speak as to how many rounds were put through it; but given its condition I'd say very few. I'm moving more to smaller, lighter home defense and am considering selling the 4506-1. Any ideas on what it is worth ? Thanks.

I got the 3rd Gen addiction about a year ago, was in counseling, then realized the money I was spending on that could be used to buy more guns. I will probably end up living in an old crack house that us S&W collectors have taken over, some one will find me pennyless with a 3rd Gen. Smith in both hands, just make sure one of you guys grab them before they take my body away. (don't want the Government to get them) LOL

I bought mine 4506-1 early this year LNIB with case, mags, papers (no lock) :) For $550 I say $550 because I traded my SW .45 mp
W/O box or paper work plus $50. So that is about $550. IMO
Mike

Thanks

Thanks. Your info is recent and gives me an idea of what mine is worth. At those numbers I think I'll keep it.
