3rd Gen Grip Question

So I have a 5903 that I love and am moving it to my daily carry piece now that the weather has turned.

Problem is I have the Hogue Pau grips, and as much as they rock for range shooting (I have sasquatch hands), the grip is just enormous for carrying.

I am looking for the factory grips, but I am guessing that is going to be a hard one to find without paying $80 for it.

So here's the question, does anyone know if the rubber Hogue grips (item 40010) are any more narrow than the wood options that they sell.

I've looked around, but cannot find any solid info on this.

No, those are first generation grips.

No. They have to be the type that include the blackstrap. I don't think the rubber Houges are any thinner than the wood. I know for fact they are too thick for for my liking.

Ended up ordering an oem grip pin off an auction site and ordered this one.

Not a terrible price, either. Midway closed out their inventory a short while back at about half that price and I snagged a couple for spares. Hopefully S&W will continue to make occasional runs of these grips.

I looked a little further and determined that they also have the straight grips for the 10XX/45XX models in stock for about $25. Several folks have been looking for those lately. The curved grip shows sold out.

If you need some for the large frame, you might ought to grab a pair while they are only $25. Both my 45 and 10 have new ones, but I don't have any spares if they get scuffed up.

Yep. The Hogue rubber grip is FAT.
Looked at some police trade-in 5906 yesterday. Some had factory grip, some had Hogue rubber.
I like the factory better.

5903 shouldn't be hard or expensive .I would think the 59xx was the most common 3rd gen.... or am I missing something???

Rubber and wood Hogue are both thick........

I've stippled my factory 59/69 guns for a better gripping service..... everything that was checkered is now like the Hogue Piranha texture.......

I may have some used but still useable grips at home. If I can find them and you want them, they're yours. I'll look when I get home. It will be a couple of days.

Just received a set of these 45xx grips from Numrich, and they were in bad shape, covered in dirt and bent out of shape. I'm in the process of returning them and seeing if they have a Factory New set to exchange for. I've ordered a handful of grips from them before and never had a problem, though.

I switched out the arched factory Smith grips for the rubber Hogues, I can shoot better with them, but like everybody says, they're FAT and tacky. They tend to pull a shirt up if you carry under one. Mines a 5904, BTW, same as your's, but blue, wish I could have found a 5903, but I do like it! I also have a 9c, which I can shoot better, but there's something to be said for metal guns, steel or alloy.

I am glad you like the Hogue grips on your 5906, because I like your factory grips on my 5906! Bob

Just received a set of these 45xx grips from Numrich, and they were in bad shape, covered in dirt and bent out of shape. I'm in the process of returning them and seeing if they have a Factory New set to exchange for. I've ordered a handful of grips from them before and never had a problem, though.

To follow up on this, Numrich was excellent to deal with, and they hand-picked me a factory new replacement set. They have an easy and efficient system for returns, including prepaid shipping, and I am very happy with their customer service.

I now have three sets of grips for my 5906. This is how I would describe the differences:
- Stock S&W grips - thinnest, hard plastic, curved backstrap, 1-piece using pin (no screws)
- Uncle Mike's - just a skosh thicker than OEM, soft/sticky surface, straight backstrap, 3-piece using pin (no screws)
- Hogue - a lot thicker than others, soft/sticky surface, curved backstrap, 2-piece (plus screws) and separate inner block for pin.

Double action was difficult with the Hogues; the other two help me reach the trigger correctly (not just with the tip). I've decided to use the Uncle Mikes because I'm willing to give up a little thinness for the sticky surface.
