I finally got around to taking some pics of my 3rd gens to post up here.

Mrs Smith
I picked up my 5906 as a LEO trade-in, and updated all the controls to black. The original grips were trashed, but I hung out on Ebay until a set of Pachmayr's showed up.

Miss Wesson
I picked up my CS9 off Gunbroker. I got custom grips from TercGen, a low-profile 3913 slide stop lever from Numrich, and a Kahr magazine baseplate and locking plate. I upgraded the sights to Trijicon night sights. I've attached a pick with the stock grips as well.

My Question
I've been trying to find out when these guns were manufactured. I looked in the back of a Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (3rd edition), but it didn't have anything this new. Can anyone help me out? The serial numbers are:
5906: KMF19XX
CS9: EKY93XX

Thanks!

Looking nice Sirius, I like what you've done with both of these pistols. I can tell you that your CS9 is one of the early versions, with the single-sided safety, plastic rear sight, and the EK-prefix. No doubt S&W will be able to tell you more. Let us know what they say!

Indeed, it did have the plastic sights originally. Besides that and the safety lever, does anyone know how they changed between the early and late ones? I did have a later model too (with steel novak sights), the "Chief's Special" engraving appears to have been applied using a different technique (you can feel the texture on one but not the other), but besides that I don't know if there are any other differences.

I currently have one 3rd gen, a recently purchased 1006. My first and only other 3rd gen was a 6906, circa 1989. I am not a big follower of Smith autos, but I wanted to round out my 10mm family. It's definitely well made, but shoots low.

sirius, Glad you got your DOMs. Have to admit that the closest I've got for most of mine are the general ranges shown in the SCSW. I did letter one of my PC guns since I ordered it direct from the factory, and wondered what the letter might say.

CH4, that is a very nice accumulation of 10MMs you have there. Reference the 1006 shooting low, I've changed front sights on fixed sight guns (S&Ws, Colts, Brownings, SIGs,etc.) many times to get the elevation to the POA/POI I wanted with the ammo I intended to use. Factory sights on fixed sight guns are ballpark. If I happen to get a fixed sight gun that shoots to the POA/POI I want at the distance, and with the ammo I'm using, Serendipity!
