3rd generation hammer interchange?

Yes and no.
Dimensionally they are identical and will interchange with no problem, but the 59 hammer has a half cock notch and the 1066 hammer does not.

So if I was to get a compact 45 ACP, could I replace the hammer with one from a 645, or 4506? I want the ability to cock the hammer. GARY

Yes. Either one will fit but 645s had half cock notches and 4506s did not. Firing DA the half cock notch can be felt as it rocks past the sear. The only purpose for the half cock notch was to catch the hammer if it fell off the full cock notch when it was not supposed to or perhaps to catch it if your thumb slipped off the spur while cocking. The firing pin block safety in 2nd and 3rd generation pistols should prevent a discharge in those situations.

I put a hammer with a spur in my 4516.

Edit to add two things. First, welcome to the forum! Second, before I bought a hammer I tried swapping hammers with a 59 and they did not interchange. I do not remember for sure which would not go in the other pistol but I think the 3rd generation 4516 hammer could not be installed in the 59. That makes sense since it would not have been safe. It's been almost 25 years. I'm certain that a 645 or 4506 hammer will fit.

Remember also that if you want to use a spurred hammer from the models you mentioned in post #3, you will have to swap the shorter hammer strut off of the "compact" frame's hammer. Depending on model, struts in the full sized guns are longer, and will not work in the shorter frame.

how about swapping a stainless steel 5906 hammer into a model 915..
the stainless one says - ONLY 3906-5906-4506.. and my 915 hammer says ONLY-4905-3905-5904-915...
only thing I see different is the lower front section on the 5906 hammer is flat and my 915 hammer is round..
how will this effect how my 915 works..
thanks!!

Well I successfully used a 5906 hammer in my 3913 so I could cock it. The 3913 is now my daily carry, & as much as I'd like to, I don't even look at the Glock 43. GARY
