A 639 slide will work fine on a 439 receiver, they are both 2nd generation pistols. The 639 slide on a 39 or 39-2 receiver will be a problem as the second gen pistols have a firing pin safety and the first gen pistols did not, so there would be no lever in the first gen receiver to push up and deactivate the firing pin block. It might be possible to remove the firing pin block from the 639 slide and make it work on a first gen receiver.
A word of caution when mixing compact parts with full size parts:
S&W made the rear of the receiver slide rails and rear of the slides on second gen compact and early third gen compact pistols shorter and rounder than those of the full size pistols. Putting a 469/669 or early production 6904/6906 slide on a full size receiver results in the end of the slide being about 1/4 inch shorter than the rails on the rear of the receiver. It will function, but look hideous. Late production 6904/6906 slides, the ones with factory Novak style sights, seem to have been cut to the same rear length as full size pistols.
