4” 57

This no dash 57 has turned into my companion while hunting. It is a 1979-1980 vintage that was carried by a good friend at a metro agency before he came to OKC PD. OCPD did not allow 41s so he retired it. He fought the demons many of us in LE did. Domestic issues and the Murrah building bombing took a toll. He finally gave up in 2019 and ended his life. It has the finish wear of most LE revolvers but is tight. I have considered swapping the TT for a thinner smooth version, having a gold bead front installed and having it DLCed. But I think I will find some decent grips (had Pachmayr when I bought it. I loathe condom grips)land just enjoy it and his memory.

I have a 6" 57 of the same vintage and an older 4" 58. I love them both.

I like it like it is. It was your buddy's gun. I like a gold bead sight but that is not easy swap on this one.

If it were me, I would keep this one just like it is, except for the grips which is an easy swap, then look for a 657. The sights are easily changed on the 657 then coat it as you like. JMO.

Not sure I'd change a thing, it looks great as-is. Maybe the stocks don't fit your hand like you'd want, so I could understand changing them for fit, but those look nice. I also understand changing the trigger to a smooth one. My M28-2 has a smooth trigger and it's the best feeling of all my S&W's.

Sorry to hear about your friend. He is at peace now. For what it is worth I think changing the stocks and enjoy the revolver as is. This is a good way to honor your friends memory.

My 4" 57 came from the same type of source as yours, a county deputy. It became my "go to" almost immediately after purchase probably 30 years ago. I have a few more ( S&Ws ) that I can choose from, but that 4" is my favorite.
