One of my sons is getting what I think is an ‘80 or ‘81 4” 63 in the original two-piece box with most of the papers. It’s a pinned barrel version as well, when he gets it out of 3 day Colorado gun jail I’ll put some pics. Did these have a sight tool and cleaning rod?

Here’s a quick pic before it goes back in the jail cell lol, the serial prefix is M154xxx. Any help with shipped year appreciated. I also got him a set of smooth presentation grips that will go on it Saturday.

SCSW 4th Edition, page 490 serial numbers M130001-M160000 1980-1981. Great .22 revolver.

Mine is M159795. Was able to find J Frame Square Butt Target Grips shortly after I bought it 10 years ago.

I purchased my M63 new (don't remember the exact year without looking for the receipt) and don't believe it came with a cleaning kit. I have not shot it in a few years so I would not bet my life on it, but don't believe it did. I suppose it also depends on what year it was made. The earlier ones probably were shipped with cleaning kits and as time went on, they might have cheaped out.

Regardless, hope it gets used (a lot!) and makes memories with the grandkids

Shipped year looks like late 1980 to ‘81. Oops, answered.

I bought my 63 no-dash back in the early 1990s. I paid $400 for it, no box.

My much older friend who knew more about guns than anyone I knew, told me I paid way too much for it. (Sadly, he's passed away now.)

Now the 63s seem to be approaching the $900 price level. Turns out, it was a good price after all. ;)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but was the 63 the first 6-shot J-frame?

Serial #M154522 was shipped by S&W in December 1980. S&W made no attempt to keep their products in serial number order in the manufacturing or shipping process. Your M-63 most likely shipped within a few months of mine but could be a years difference in ship dates. The cleaning kit consists of a cleaning rod, bore mop, bore brush, and a sight adjusting tool (screwdriver) that was included with your M-63.

The magna stocks are too small for my hand so I’ve replaced them with target stocks also. They really change the feel to my hand and are much more shootable as well.

I bought my 63 serial # M147*** in the spring of 1982. First gun I actually bought with my own money after law school. Paid $232 for it Still have the box with receipt(got the gun too :D). That gun and my dad's Ruger .22 pistol , circa 1952, are the two that will come with me to the nursing home ;)
