A late model Colt Official Police is right at it. The S&W model 12 came in a 4” and is under 30oz.

Old Smith

Hi everyone, I'm Glenn. I have acquired an old S&W 38 Special. It belonged to my late father-in-law. We found it while cleaning out the in-laws house. It was nickel-plated with black plastic grips. Plating was in rough shape. The serial # is 117691. It has a 6 1/2" barrel with a large half circle front site. I was scared to shoot it. I took it to my gunsmith. He took it apart cleaned it and found everything in working order. Says it shoots fine! He suggested re-finishing it which we did in matte black. To me, its beautiful! I'm going to buy a case for it and present it to my mother-in-law. Can someone give me some background on this gun?

Welcome to the Neighborhood Glenn!

You might want to try posting some pics and starting another thread. that way more folks will see it!

The older steel guns with the standard, tapered barrel and the magna grips come in around 30 ounces, maybe an ounce more. I just weighed my 10-5 wearing Uncle Mike grips (heavy) and the total weight was just under 33 ounces.

S&W did make a few 327PDs with a 4" barrel. The trick would be finding one.

Here is what I can come up with:

The top one in the picture is a factory nickel S&W 10-5. Unloaded it comes in at 1 lb. 14.75 ounces which totals 30.75 ounces.

The bottom is a Colt Police Positive .38 Special. Unloaded it comes in at 1 lb. 6.2 ounces unloaded. Six rounds weight in at 3.15 ounces. So, loaded it is 25.35 ounces.

I would sacrifice the weight difference for the S&W. The Colt is really small for a man size hand.

u can get a 4" 44 magnum 6 shot at 25oz,,, 329pd

I'm quite sure 44 magnums on that lightweight frame would NOT be fun to shoot. :D

Look for one of the S&W scandium alloy revolvers from Performance center.
Current models are 325 thunder ranch 45acp at 30.7oz. The 327 TRR8 is a 4" 357 magnum that comes in at 35oz. A buddy of mine has one and it is.....sweet.

keep in mind that the scandium alloy S&W's are not cheap ;)

Here is an early Colt Police Positive Special that fits your requirements:

it weighs about 23 oz

This is the Smith & Wesson Forum, boys. S&W made the S&W M&P Airweight after the aluminum cylindered Aircrewman was found to be “unacceptable,” to say the least. It became the S&W Model 12. This is my 1963 vintage Model 12-2 with Tyler T-Grip and 6 rounds of 130 grain hollow points. As you can see, it weighs a hefty 1 pound 5.6 ounces, or 21.6 ounces. They were available with 4 inch tapered barrels that couldn’t have weighed more than a few ounces more. Smith. And. Wesson.
