4” K-38 Target Masterpiece (14-3) question

Gboling, looks like a good start to the mystery of where my gun went. I hope as time goes on someone will have one of the 20 guns sent and where it came from. Your story is very interesting especially since you were there. As these guns come out I'm wondering what it will do to the value. A 4"-15 ex LAPD gun is almost no big deal but a 4"-14 could be. Mine is an easy 99% gun. Thanks for the info, Larry.

I read all of this post and it made me get my 14-2 out and look it over. It's a 4 inch heavy barrel, lettering is all centered on the right side, in about 98% condition. Serial# is K660***

A 1962 4" Model 14....

My first post....

I just had what looks to be a rare 14 delivered today. It shoots like a 14 and has a 4" barrel but not a thick, thick one like on Dayton guns. The serial number seems to indicate that it was made in '62.

In my first post I forgot to mention, the serial number of my 14-2 is K754XXX. the barrel is identical to that depicted in woad__yurt's post except for the front sight. Mine is the Patridge sight commonly found on the model-14. Woad__yurt's has the ramp front sight which poses another question. The grips on his gun are identical to those originally issued on my 14-2. As I mentioned, the dept. later replaced them.

These relics will keep us digging and guessing.

Hello
I can Tell you it is Not a Dayton Gun. Those guns were 14-2's and shipped between 1965-1968 Time span. I had the Nickel example shown which was a Dayton Gun and it shipped in 1966 but it now resides in a friends collection and his Pre-16 K-32 Masterpiece Now Resides in mine.:D The Dayton Guns had a slightly Larger Frame area To accept the Larger style barrels that differed from standard model 14's. I have Heard of some 4" Model 14's that shipped to The K.C.P.D. but I am not sure when they shipped, perhaps someone that has one will chime in. Here is what The Dayton Guns Looked like...I hope this helps, ;) Hammerdown

Chime ;)

According to Roy Jinks' article reprinted in the Fall 1979 S&WCA Journal (Vol 11), the KCPD 4" K-38s were shipped 4/1/57. Most s/n's were K292XXX but a few range as low as K278XXX and as high as K298XXX. Based on the one I saw, they were 4screw pre-14s.
