What can y'all tell me about this .38 Special revolver? I'm going to lay hands on it for closer inspection tomorrow and I'd like to know more about it.

Obviously I'm No expert but that is an early one. No shoulder/flared collar where the barrel goes into the frame and no locking lug under the barrel.

1899's were cataloged in four barrel lengths: 4", 5", 6", and 6 1/2. There are three that were special-ordered with 8" barrels. The following picture is two of them, from my collection.

The blue gun is the only one of the three that letters as being originally-shipped with the 8" barrel. It went to Dr Reginald Sayre, a New York physician and Captain of four US Olympic teams from about 1908 to 1920. This gun is shown in Roy Jink's History of Smith & Wesson on page 171.

There are no records for the nickel gun, other than the shipping date and destination, so it is not possible to know the original barrel length of this special-ordered gun.

The third gun is a 6 1/2" zero-gun originally delivered to D B Wesson in 1900, and then shows up again in 1906, with a 8" barrel, in the possession of Charles Call.

Regards, Mike Priwer

The hunt is on!

Samuel Simmons, aka ruffkat on GB, has what you are looking for. He is a very talented machinist, and makes quite a few repro parts. I have ordered .22 HE (Ladysmith) parts from him before and was very impressed with the quality of his work. He also offers most of his parts in "antique blue", high polish blue, and nickel. Just a moment...
