I have a nice model 15 that has a sweet action job by Nelson Ford that I wanted to use for Service type matches.

anyway the lighter barrel is not my favorite compared to my Model 65 for a steadier hold at 25 yds.

I inquired and got a bite on a 4" SW 38spl Kframe barrel which I bought. I asked what this barrel came off of and the seller did not know.

after reviewing the pics, I bought with intentions of having a smith screw it on my model 15.

I sent my gun/barrel to gunsmith Bob Jones (MS) who called me on Monday and said I sent him a model 10 barrel and putting this barrel on my model 15 and fixing the front sight would make it illegal for NRA Service type matches.

I told him not to perform any services since I wanted to spend my $$$ on something I could use for comp. I also inquired that I purchased a Model 10 H/B and it looked nothing like the barrel I sent him.

He (Mr Jones) told me SW never made a heavy barrel for a Model 15. I told him about the Dayton guns and he never heard about them.

I would consider Mr Jones an expert on SW revolvers, so here is my question...can you tell me what gun this barrel came off of? the seller did not know what it came off of and had it stored for a project when he saw my request.

SW 4" heavy barrel with heavy serrated top rib, pinned barrel cut. Mr Jones told me the sight base appears to have been altered.

if you click on this link and go to post/pics on page 3 by NWShooter, my barrel looks very close. I dont have the barrel in my possession.

Model 14 4" barrel??????

If you are willing to spend the money, get a 6" K38 Masterpiece and have it cut to 4". The barrel will be heavier than the tapered tube of the 15.

The barrel came off of a 15-5 or 15-6, smith made these guns somewhere between 1986 and 91 ,I think called model 15 combat masterpiece, 4-6, they are the same as a model 14 barrel, not sure of what sights were offered, ramp obviously, dont know if patridge was available.Bob

I dont think that would be legal for NRA Service Match as it will require a non SW front sight or a non factory attachment of one.

but it has a pinned barrel cut????? I guess it could have been altered.

I dont have the barrel in my possession right now.

if you have a Model 14 frame and a Model 15 frame.....is there any real difference? is it just the barrel and maybe cosmetic differences?

Were you looking to shoot this at NRA police dist matches or military Dist matches. The frames are diffferent where they meet the barrel.Check this forum under the guns for sale, there was a b eautiful 4" model 15 masterpiece for sale from a member from georgia, I would have bought it ,but its too hard to get handguns sent to CA,ugh!Let me know.Bob

this is for NRA Police type SVC matches.

St Regis, (nice piece and would have been perfect for me (kframe h/b!) before your gun goes byby....can you tell me if the front sight base is intergral to the barrel or is it pinned on?

can you send me a few pics so I can print and send them to the gunsmith and show him?

thanks in advance

CALREB- The original front sight or a similar replacement is generally used on chopped barrels. If the rules prohibit modified barrels then it would be illegal. If it's just the length then it should work.

Understand, I offered this only because he seemed willing to spend way more money than I think constitutes good sense on this project.

I shoot my Model 65 4" equal to the top shooters in a area monthly shooting match however I think the fixed rear seems to keep me from advancing (my guess)

I bought two Model 15s and had one tuned but when I get back to the 25 yd drill, the gun seems too light and my shots drift. I go back to the 65 and I return to my avg.

I tried to sell for even the action jobbed M15 but got no hits (to buy something else that would fit my needs).

I would like to stay 38spl for the accuracy potential of the shorter cylinder and would be willing to install a SW factory heavy barrel in my M15 if it would be legal for NRA competition. I will not spend the $$$ if it will not be legal.

I understand grabbing a M14 and cutting the barrel, but would NRA judges allow that with an aftermarket front sight......?(I think I would be in the same boat) so that's is why I decided to go with a heavy barrel.

I just wanted the original install on this barrel so I can report back to the gunsmith.

thanks in advance
