FWIW, tests on .40 S&W ammo by the OHP rated Speer Gold Dot 180gr first and Golden Sabre 180gr second. Their criteria including shooting through windshields, which probably accounts for the 180gr preference.

I prefer Federal HST's in 180 grain but would not be uncomfortable with either Winchester Ranger T's or Speer Gold Dots.

Winchester PDX1 180gr.

Bonded JHP 180 gr. Winchester PDX1 for .40cal :)

thanks for the advise everyone but while were on the subject what is everyones pick for there least favorite?

Least favorite SD loads in 40 cal are:

* All frangible loads.
* 155-gr. due to lack of penetration. All copper HP from Barnes is OK for a lightweight bullet.
* 165-gr. unbonded and non +P due to less than ideal penetration. Bonded midweights are OK at +P velocities.

I've carried both the Federal 180grn HST and the Winchester Ranger T 180grn with confidence when my department carried the .40S&W.
