So, I'm low-key thinking of picking up a .40 S&W pistol or PCC to fill a niche. Absolutely don't need it, but you know us gun folks…

With that being said, I'm pondering either a Beretta 96 or a Smith polymer (M&P?).

Your thoughts?

Also wondering about an FP-C.

Check the police trades at AIM Surplus and King's Firearms. You can get a M&P40 1.0 in good working condition for under $250. They usually also have 2.0's and Glock 22s if you are looking for .40. I bought 5 or 6 M&Ps from AIM, one from Kings, and several Glock 22s from AIM. Condition varied from light wear on the outside, almost new on the inside, to virtually unissued/like new. Night sights are typically dead.

If you're really considering the folding carbine then a matched set, FPC and MP in .40 cal, is the way to go.

I do the same in 9mm. The MP was my carry gun before the FPC came out so it became a natural companion piece.

I bought a Beretta 96, and liked it so much that I then bought a 92.

While I absolutely love Smith & Wesson hand ejector double action revolvers, their automatics don't do anything for me. And I don't like plastic guns, even if I did like Smith & Wesson automatics.

I have a 5-inch M&P 2.0 in FDE color. Much as I disliked my original M&P 40 because of its awful trigger and "substandard" accuracy, I'm quite fond of the newer one. I also like the older P229s.

The Beretta, not so much. I like the 92F just fine, but am bothered by the need to constantly adjust my grip with the increased recoil of the 96.

How about a S&W 610 revolver? 10mm has ballistics as good or better than .357 Magnum, and .40SW fit the same chamber and moon clips. Actually, I'm a big fan of .40SW, foregoing 9mm 10 years ago with a SIG P226, P229, and P239. More recently, I went crazy and paired a 610 up with a M&P Mod 2 in 10mm.

I have a Glock model 22 and a Beretta 96D. My Glock 32 has a.40 caliber barrel as well. All are solid sidearms.

Neither of these are manufactured any more, but look for a Springfield Armory EMP4 or a mid-'90's BHP MkIII in .40 S&W. Both hold 10+1 rounds. Can't go wrong with a JMB design.

If you want polymer, Ruger used to make a SR40 full size and a SR40c compact. I had the compact for a number of years, it makes a nice concealed carry. Also holds 10+1.

I carry a first generation M&P 40 when I worked for G4S.

I'm not going to lie I just never really warmed up to that gun, I liked my M&P 9 better.

That said it was a good gun. I qualified expert with it every time I shot. I will say that the recoil was noticeably stronger than on the M&P 9. More because it was a polymer gun than it because of the 40 Smith & Wesson at least that's how it seemed to me.

This is the only 40 I currently own. I'm not sure that I would recommend it because Smith and Wesson no longer supports it and I have heard that spare parts for the hard to come by.

The best 40 Smith & Wesson I've ever owned was a CZ75B.

Unfortunately apparently they're pretty rare and I'm not sure if magazines or spare parts would be easy to find.

I will promise you though if you ever shoot a CZ75B in .40 you'll think you're shooting a .22

Police trade in 40 S&W's can be a very good deal.
40 S&W is one of my favorite calibers. I have a Ruger GP100 Match Champion 10mm but only shoot 40's, a couple of Glocks, Para Ordnance P16 and MechTech Glock Carbine Conversion Unit (PCC) with child friendly recoil. I had my kids starting at 10 years old, busting gallon jugs of water at 100 yards with a Strike Fire red dot sight. 2022 9.27 2.webp

Bought a new 2nd Gen Glock 23 in the mid 90's, and never looked back. Originally a 1911 guy. But once I adjusted to the Glock trigger and feel, it is all I carry…CC, EDC…model 23's and 27's. If headed to the woods, my Glock 20 is on my side…same feel, same trigger. Friends try to get me to try, or buy, the latest wonder nine, SIG, S&W, Springfield, etc. Sorry, I am comfortable with the Glock system and 40 Caliber. My new gun money goes into my collectible Colts, Wins, and Smith revolvers.

If you get a Sig P229 in .40 S&W, you can hunt down a P228 upper and locking block to run 9mm also.

My first.40 was this Performance Center S&W .40 Tactical. I can highly recommend, but good luck finding one.

My first 40 was a S&W 4006 with adj. sights....Got one box of WW 20rd 40 with the gun......So new, no on the shelf ammo to be found......I cut down and inside neck reamed 10mm bras so I could reload and shoot.........Second was a Sig 229.......Third many years later was a S&W Shield..........Still have all three.....Favoring the 229.........But still shoot all three.........Mostly with cast 175 gr truncated cone bullets.
