Not sure I completely understand what you are looking for but "40 caliber" means a bullet diameter of .400" where 40S&W is the entire cartridge. A 10mm is also .40 caliber but is not a 40S&w.
 
When people say 40 caliber, it is more than likely they are talking about the 40 S&W cartridge, but they above poster is entirely correct.
 
There is no difference. 40 caliber comes from Ruger not wanting to put S&W on their weapons.
