Several other threads have me thinking that I might to make my Shield into "the best of both worlds" with a 9mm package, so that I can swap at my leasure -- or when I have an ammo shortage with one caliber. I know I have to buy the barrel and mags, but what about the recoil spring?

I have a 40 shield and have done the conversion with the 9 barrel and 9 mags, worked fine for me as well as many others on this forum without changing the recoil spring. The only issue is finding a barrel. Guns and gear in Agawam, Ma. seems to be the only place to buy the barrel. They get them in stock from time to time just like them on facebook and check daily to see if they have them in stock on their page as they usually sell out within a couple hours of recieving them. Their number is 413-786-0100. Good luck

HOLD THE PRESSES

I took my broken recoil spring into my lgs and had Joe see if he had a plug for it (which he didn't, but while there, I asked him about the 9mm conversion. He said anyone that is doing that and using the 40 cal slide is taking a big risk because the slide, including ejector and extractor are set up for the wider 40 cal. So to do it right, you would need to not only buy the barrel (the 2nd most expensive part of the gun) but you would need to purchase a new slide also (which is the MOST expensive part of the gun). The frame is cheap, according to Joe.

I trust his judgement as he is a certified S&W gunsmith. One other gun store fellow overheard and he was shaking his head saying he couldn't believe how many people have called him about doing the same thing.

So the moral of the story is --- it would be almost as cheap just to buy another Shield.

So u are telling me that ur gun smith told you the Shield has both an extractor and an ejector? And ur also telling me he is a certified S&W gunsmith.........I'd like to know where he printed up his certificate. Because the last i check ANY m&p only has an "ejector", no such thing as an extractor. They are sometimes referenced as the same but there is only ONE part number and ONE part.

Oh and for giggles, u can tell him that the 9mm and .40 have the same exact ejector part numbers. I wonder how he will explain to us that they are different. :D

I'm sure glad u trust this guy. But my advise would be to find a new gunsmith.

Hey -- so I got my terminology wrong. Don't be a wise ***. What I don't have wrong is this guy's reputation, and I am not the only one here on this forum who knows this guy. But, what are you going to say if I contact S&W and they also recommend against it?

Cool u got ur terminology wrong, thats understandable.

But as i said, the part numbers for the ejector are the same. So there is no difference between them within the 9mm and the .40.

Maybe ur s&w certified gun smith can explain to us where they are different. As it sounds like he knows something that not even s&w knows, lol.

PS: I've been doing this conversion longer than anyone around here. And many will agree that we have beat this horse to death and back several times. It works flawlessly and has been since day one. Yes the weapons differ (slightly in a few places), but nothing worth getting our panties in a wad over. Search this forum u will find some threads with great information on our testings as well as our findings on this conversion.

As for ur original comment, its as cheap to buy a new 9mm Shield than it would be to actually buy a conversion. Well will u please show me where i can buy another 9mm Shield for around $100 shipped to my door. I'm sure many people would like to get in on this.

S&W can and WILL recommend against a conversion of any sort. #1 its a safety concern (any conversion is) and IF anything were to ever happen. They want to make sure their butt is covered. #2 they tell u it doesnt work, because they simply want u to buy another weapon. Thats another $400 they can make off u. Pretty smart business idea, IMO.

So now you are telling me that I won't get the truth out of S&W. Sounds like you are making excuses before I even make the call.

BTW, I will ask them directly about the so-called "identical" part numbers.

I'm not making excuses. I'm just telling you what they have already told me and many others on this forum. Just speaking from experience.

No need to ask them about part number. I'll provide the link for you. Check out the M&P line between the 9mm and the .40. U will find that each one has the identical part number for the ejector. FS is both the same, 9c and 40c is the same and so on.

40 shield & 9mm Option

I also have the 9mm barrel from the same source and use it in the 40 Shield. Works perfectly. You do not need the 9mm mags. I got some but works with the 40 mags. Absolutely no problems. I even had my friends do the same, getting the 9mm barrel, and there have been no problems. Could it be the S&W "gun smith" just wants to sell more guns??? Of course, that is why they discourage the 9mm barrel conversion.

The parts list does not show the Shield specifically -- but I did notice that between the M&P 40 and M&P 9, they have totally different Slide part numbers. So perhaps that is what is important?

The slide is different, that is correct. But theres nothing there to be worried about. Once again u can do a search on this forum and find all of the info u want. We go into detail showing the differences and similarities between them.

Correct again the Shield wasnt listed on the above list. But as with all the other m&p's the ejector has always been the same between the .40 and 9mm. All of the m&p .40 and 9mm have always been built on the .40 frame. This is why they are so similar to one another. Small (minor) changes are made (such as the slide). But those small changes have no affect whats so ever on the way the weapon performs. It would cost s&w too much money to design the .40 and 9mm totally different from one another. So they are smart to stick to the design of the higher pressure cartridge (.40) and then work their way down to the (9mm). This is just the way s&w works, always has and likely always will.

By no means am i trying to get into a peeing contest with you or anyone here. But im sure all of ur questions can be answered by doing a little search. As said above, we have beat this horse to death over and over again. Therefore, we just keep referring people to use the search function.

Below is a few things u can look at. The first is the original video i posted showing this conversion could be done. This is after I had been testing all of this for several months. The 2nd video is after i ordered another 9mm barrel and mags to also do some test. Also this thread goes into more detail about the conversion. And shows the 9mm to .40 conversion being done. Plenty of info here to learn a few things and answer a few questions.

The extractor is mounted on the slide. The ejector is mounted to the sear housing block. For some reason S&W does not list a separate part number for the extractor, only the complete slide assembly. Obviously, the M&P does have an extractor AND an ejector according to the Armorer's Manual.

It is what it is. I apologize for the above comments. It sounds pretty crazy and weird why s&w doesnt list the part.

Now since the ejector is the exact same part number between the .40 and 9mm and we all know the extractor does its job and actually extracts the 9mm case from the .40 slide (and the .40 case from the 9mm slide)............Are we still saying we should all go out and buy a whole new 9mm Shield, lol.

Obviously, you and many others here have documented successful conversion of the shield from 40 to 9mm by simply replacing the barrel and mags..

For the OP, you should watch robkarrob11's videos on youtube. He documents everything very well.

Some people like to talk a good talk (some gun smiths). But there are plenty of us who have walked the walk. And the videos show we dont mind doing some walking, lol.

I personally know a gun smith whom told me it wouldnt be possible to do this same conversion and that it would be dangerous. Now the funny part is he himself has the same conversion :D

Funny how that works.

^^ LMMFAO, i was wondering how long it would take before someone post that.

Thanks to u, my ole lady won my $100.

But the fact still remains. The .40 to 9mm conversion works without issue and NO it isn't cheaper to just buy a whole new 9mm weapon. The videos speak for themselves. Sorry guys this horse has been beaten to death again.
