$400 Home Defence 12 gauge Which one?

870 Marine Magnum

I picked up my lightly used 870 Marine Magnum last year for $400. It does everything I need and the cool factor is mighty high. You might look around a little?

Thank you sir, living in South Florida near the ocean, I have considered that option before. It would be something I would therefor take on a boat also without worry. Good point sir, thank you.

The Mossberg 930 is an excellent auto shotgun. I owned one for a while (the home defender model with the short barrel) and it shot everything I put in it. Much softer shooting than the pump guns. If I remember right, you can use the longer sport barrels on the 930 also.

If you're in the market for a Remington 870, CDNN has the synthetic speedfeed stock 870P for $399. Might want to give them a call on that as it's a very good price for the 870P.

Large gun shows sometimes yield a PD trade in Rem 870, in beat up but hardly fired condition. I got one for about $250 years ago, a Police Magnum 18", had some scratches but looks like it never saw a live round fired.

The Rem 870 is more durable than a Mossberg 500, but 99.9% of us won't shoot either enough to see the difference.

For HD I would definitely go with a pump.

You won't go wrong with either a 500 or an 870. I like the tang-mounted safety on the Mossberg, although if you're using a pistol grip the safety on the 870 is better.

I appreciate everyones input, thank you very much. 53 years old, and I'm going back to school- long rifle and shotgun school.:D

First off let me state that I'm partial to the Ithaca 37. That said I went with a Rem.870 Police Magnum a couple of years ago when they were having some sort of sale. That and I've used these in service, so I trust the design.
Also Remington 870 has almost got the add on market to itself, so that's a plus too. My 870 is stock right out of the box, it came with a speed feed stock and simple bead out front, which is all I need! IIRC I paid $350 for it at the time.
My advice, go to a well stocked shop and try a few, see how they fit and work the actions rapidly. Also look at some of the 20ga shotguns as well! Remember the "little" 20 will do the job! Dale

Remington 870 Express HD with 18" barrel and extended-tube are going for $329 at some shops locally. A used Remington 870 Police Magnum goes for under $400. As a previous poster said, 870 accessories are abundant and most every gun-smith has spare magazine-springs and such on-hand.

I want to thank everyone again. Safe to say for a car guy like me, its almost like the G.M., FORD, Chrysler debate. They each thier pro's and con's, and it just pretty much boils down to personal preference. They will all get you from point A to point B, likewise all the S/G's mentioned will ventilate the B/G. Providing the B/G makes it past 2 very knarly bulldogs. I will check out the Summit ones this evening. Thank you all.:D
