Police get a new tool to stop drivers: Beware the Grappler!

"Hello sir, we recovered your vehicle. The good news is, we caught the suspects. The bad news is, we destroyed your vehicle.

Oh, and here's the bill for towing your vehicle to the scrap yard."

So, how many thousands of dollars does this thing cost?
And, how many patrol cars will get one?
How much does it cost for a single use? (Besides the cost of totalling a vehicle.)

How much would it cost trying to PIT someone. The insurance has probably already written off the vehicle if the owner had good insurance. In the original video, had the other 2 police vehicles pulled up behind the bad guys rear bumper he wouldn't have been able to back up and try and take off again.

You are worried about how much it costs, really? How many PITs have gone wrong and killed an innocent person and or the bad guy? How many millions have been spent paying family members that have sued for a PIT that went wrong. Even if an agency had to spend a couple hundred K to outfit 2-6 vehicles, it would be worth the cost in law suits and life don't you think?

It appears most vehicles snagged by the grappler suffer little damage. Ripping the rear axle off took a lot of effort on the part of this miscreant and he was apprehended. It seems like a safer alternative to speed strips or a PIT maneuver.

Some jurisdiction restrict high speed pursuits because of liability issues. Many stolen vehicles end up destroyed, chopped or torched anyway, so this is a great option for LE. I'm all for it!
