I prefer the 870 as I feel it has a little more class than a Mossberg. What I have is a police trade in Mossberg 500 with a seven shot magazine that I got a few years ago for $125.00. I've never had a problem with it.

I have used and trained others to use both and only ever seen one failure between them. Either brand is serviceable for defense. I prefer Remington and don't care for the placement of the safety on the Mossberg. You could also consider Ithaca as it appears to be a fine weapon also.
I want to thank everyone who has already replied. I live in a very nice, quiet, newer neighborhood here in Florida, so the shotgun purchase will also be for recreational use as well. I'm not much of a hunter, and pistol stock shotguns are not allowed at our outdoor range. Last year I purchased a Mossberg, and also thought it lacked a little character lets say. I wasn't expecting a $1500 Beretta quality shotgun, just a little better feel and workmanship. I sold it after one session at the range. I have heard Winchester has a entry level 12 in that price range too, is that correct, and is it worth looking at? Right now I'm leaning toward the 870 Remington series entry level 12. If you really want to save $$$ there is a Chinese knock off of the Remington .It only costs $200 ish.
I had one and it was actually pretty good and shot well and gave no trouble,but..

I am a gun snob and since it was not American Made, I gave it away to my friend to take cruising on his yacht.
It is a New England Arms Pardner . the accessories for the 870 will fit it too, and at $200 for the gun you could afford to buy lots of goodies with the savings.
Sir, did I ever enjoy that video. I would have never, ever guessed anyone could hit that far target like he did with the slugs at the begining of the clip. Not only did he hit the target, he drilled it one after another. I was totally in awe. If you have his address, I would like to send him a new hat though, S&W, Ruger, Beretta, FN, anything but that other brand.

I no longer want aluminum receivers. The one in my 500A came to me from the factory with the steel screw for the butt where it goes in the back was stripped out. I bought it, never used it, decided to change the wood to a plastic since it was just soaking up oil, and it fell right off with half a turn. Maybe mine was one in a million but no Winchesters or Mossbergs for me now. I would buy a used beater 870 Express and either chop the barrel or buy the short tube and replace it.

Both are utilitarian home defense models and offer good value. Having had both, I can say that either should do well for you. The Rem might have a better perceived quality to it, but the Moss models are fine.

Both guns have been used for years for the purpose you want one for, I would suggest trying both models out if you know someone who has one or if you have a range you can rent them at. I prefer the 870 just because the quality looks better and it is what I am use to and have been trained on. I sincerely doubt either gun will dissapoint you as far as functioning goes though.

He's an admitted Glock guy and can back up his shooting skills with his trusty Glock(s). However, he recently did a side-by-side comparison with an M&P 40c which I posted on the M&P forum. I doubt that he'll ever wear anything buy his Glock hat.

barrel cut to 19" with a hacksaw and cleaned up with files. Has the factory wood furniture-I do not like folding/collapsable stocks. Mine also has sling swivels on it, but it does not wear the sling for HD use.
I carried a Winchester M-12 at times in the Army back in the last century, and I know how rugged and reliable the basic Mossberg 500 series is-I have had one in my house for several decades.
Mine has a bandolier of buckshot and slug rounds hanging on it. I like to keel the gun itseld light, and now hang 10 pounds of toys on it then wonder how it got so heavy...

The Win 1300 Defender is an updated M-12 and an excellent pump SG IMO.
Is it safe to say, more L.E.O. use the 870 over the Mossburg? Is it legal to cut down your own barrel? I'm assuming there is a minimum length that it must be. Are all states the same for the minimum length requirement? Thanks for the help, I am not ashamed to admit to the fact of being very ignorant when it comes to long rifles and shotguns, I have very little experience with either.

26ford ... Minimum barrel lengths are universal state-wide. An option you may care to consider is to go the Class 3 route and pick up a 12"-14" 12 gauge pump. These are classified as AOWs and only require a $5 tax stamp (as opposed to $200 for any other Class 3 item). You can find them with a bit of searching, although they are a big handful with anything more than light scattershot. Great for close quarters, and tuck away nicely at home.

I got a barely used Mossberg for $150 on GunBroker, then went searching and found a barely used 18" barrel to switch on it. the best part is the Browning Choke tubes are interchangable in the Mossberg.

With a little looking, you can find trade in 870 Police and 870 Magnum Police models for around $300. Some of these show some roughing up on the outside (from duty), but most of them will have been shot very little. A little elbow grease nets you an 870 that got extra care and heavy-duty parts from the factory at a bargain price. I paid $289 for a very lightly used, walnut stocked Magnum Police last year. After cleaning off the crud, I discovered a nearly new gun underneath.

I've got a Stevens security/field. It's a clone of an Ithica 37. Comes with an 18.5" barrel for security and a 28" barrel for hunting. Great shotgun for what it is, and under $300.

870 Marine Magnum
I picked up my lightly used 870 Marine Magnum last year for $400. It does everything I need and the cool factor is mighty high. You might look around a little?

Rem 870 or Mossberg 500. Whichever has the features you like, buy it. You won't go wrong with either.

The Mossberg 930 is an excellent auto shotgun. I owned one for a while (the home defender model with the short barrel) and it shot everything I put in it. Much softer shooting than the pump guns. If I remember right, you can use the longer sport barrels on the 930 also.
If you're in the market for a Remington 870, CDNN has the synthetic speedfeed stock 870P for $399. Might want to give them a call on that as it's a very good price for the 870P.

Large gun shows sometimes yield a PD trade in Rem 870, in beat up but hardly fired condition. I got one for about $250 years ago, a Police Magnum 18", had some scratches but looks like it never saw a live round fired.
The Rem 870 is more durable than a Mossberg 500, but 99.9% of us won't shoot either enough to see the difference.
For HD I would definitely go with a pump.

You won't go wrong with either a 500 or an 870. I like the tang-mounted safety on the Mossberg, although if you're using a pistol grip the safety on the 870 is better.

Due to age and arthritis, I use a Mossberg 500 in 20 gauge with a short rifle sighted smoothbore barrel.
