Picked up a 4003 this weekend for $400. I couldn't resist. Only came with 1 mag though, but I have plenty. It has the decock only option and labeled such on side. No LE department names on it. Hole in hammer.

serial# VYJ65XX

What you guys know about this sample?

Thanks,

Rosewood

Nice looking pistol - odd that it has hole in hammer - thought that was mostly early 40xx but VYJ would seem likely to be later maybe 1995/96.

My 4006 VYC27xx does not have holy hammer. Wondering if they kept the holy hammer longer in the Aluminum frames?

Decock only most likely LE but you already knew that. 4006 VYJ533x was a California State Parks pistol as marked on slide.

I saw A 4003 in great shape w/ 1 mag at A gunshow recently for $515 and I just couldn't pull the trigger at that price. I have a couple 4006's and A couple 4046's so I couldn't really justify it. $400 sounds A whole lot better!

I always wanted a 4003, but found a 4006 maybe 7-8 years ago and bought it. Walked away from this one, came back an hour or so later and I broke.

4003

I currently have a 4003tsw without factory rail as my EDC. Great gun. You will not have any problems. Decent price you paid, too.

The 4003 is a great pistol. I’m surprised S&W didn’t make more of them and they are rare. The weight is so much more manageable than the 4006. Great find, definitely worth every penny.
