4006 Action Lockup

At the range today, mu buddy was shooting his 4006 CHP . At the end of a magazine, the gun "locked up". It has a round chambered, as far as I can tell in the right place, do not know if it is live, it will not fire, the trigger has no resistance, the safety will not engage, the receiver is completely forward and will not budge an iota or be pried by reasonable force. Barrel pointed down range while tinkering was going on. Boxed it up and it will be at a good gunsmith Monday. I have never seen this, what would cause this? Thank you more mechanically inclined forum members.

An oversized round may be locking things up. The slide may be slightly out of battery thereby preventing the operation of the trigger and safety.

I don't know what is locking the action, but I do know the slide won't go back unless the rear of the barrel can drop.

Ask your friend to press down on the rear of the barrel while pulling back on the slide.

If he was shooting reloads, he might have encountered a round that was previously fired in an older Glock, which will put a bulge near the base of the case. If the bulge is not sufficiently resized, it can wedge itself into a tighter chamber and tie up the pistol.

Most likely a bulged case issue. Common when loading 40, 10mm. I case gauge all reloads to avoid this problem.

That doesn't eliminate the possibility of an improperly sized round.

The verdict is in, luckily the gun is fine, but it was a 9mm round fired in a 4006, the casing had expanded and blocked the movement. About what Aegis said. My friend will not live this one down for a long while.

This does not usually require a smith to fix a wood dowel and a vice is all it takes. Recently I was at a friends house and we loaded 40SW around 15 rounds, For some reason his Dillon 550 was not dropping powder in the case on every pull. SO I had 5 rounds with no powder.. I shot one and the primer moved the bullet into the barrel. I could not fix it at the range but with proper tools got it out pretty quick.. We never did figure out why his machine malfunctioned. It worked fine ever since.

Using the woden dowel and a rubber mallet works like a charm. I cleared a Springfield EMP and a G19 that way today. Bad ammo in both cases. Incorrect OAL on the S&B round in the EMP and screwed up reload in the G19.

Be sure to keep the muzzles down range and your fingers clear of the barrel. And TAP - not whack.

I will look to have those items in the range bag in the future. Had not needed them. I have always been able to clear with the slide or cleaning rod, but then I may load magazines more carefully. I was in the next lane and did not view the misfire. Happy ending as I talked him into the 4006. Thank you.
