That is the size I used when I had my M610. I even went to a 180gr LRNFP for the 38/40 so I could make them look more like revolver rounds! ;)

Gotta play with the OAL and powder weight though. Those chambers are really set up for the 10mm with semi-auto bullets in mind!

Thanks gents. That 180gn LRNFP 38/40 is what I just loaded up....we'll see....

Got response back from Hodgdon "I'm sorry but we don't have loads for cast bullets in the .40 S&W. It was designed as a high pressure cartridge and we've never developed any low pressure lead loads."

I didn't ask them for low pressure, I asked them for steel target recipes.

We'll see.

I found a Lee .38/40 mould in a gun shop at a decent price. I haven't had a chance to cast any yet but it's supposed to make a 225 gr. SWC bullet. I'm hoping to work up a load for some of my 10mms, none of which are revolvers.

I can tell you from experience, you will certainly have your work cut out for you! ;)

I tried to make a round in the 10mm with a 200gr LRNFP Cowboy bullet and almost drove myself crazy! (Short trip, I know! ) :)

At any rate, with a full front driving band or a LTC design you will have some real problems. What I found was that I needed to seat a little too deeply for my liking with suggested loads.

If it were me, I would find a slow powder, use the minimum charge and make my OAL as long as possible for consistent feeding/chambering and go from there. This is what I did. Not sure I would attempt anything like this in an auto with an unsupported chamber though. To each his own!

Be safe!

With a lot more 40 brass than 10 I load a Berrys CPRN 180 in 40 cases with 5grs Universal for right at 900fps out of my 5" 610. Plenty accurate and it's like shooting a .38.

I size all my cast bullets for 10mm and .40 S&W to .401". For my Model 610, the most accurate cast bullet I've found is the SAECO 200 grain RNFP, which drops out of my mold at 206 grains, with my alloy. Deadly accurate and hard hitting in my Model 610. It also works very well in my other 10mm pistols.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Skip, I was trying to make some guesstimates by measuring off the mould until I can cast some bullets. Which I need to do desperately for a whole bunch of other moulds too. I'm going to be very cautious about powder space with that long bullet, but OAL is going to be a concern here. It has that long, narrow "Lee" SWC nose and may not work, or even fit, in the magazines.

I have to avoid the cast lead in my G23. I'm not going to buy a barrel specially for lead, so FMJ is for the Glock; lead is for 610. While I can get an excellent price from a local caster, he has very limited bullet size choices.
