4013 (single stack) vs. 457

Hello all,

Just wondering if there is any real advantage to the 4013 single stack over the 457. I have a 457 that shoots great and was aquired at a very reasonable cost years ago. No complaints about it at all.

But the 4013 has always been in the back of my mind if I run across one. Capacity gain is only 1 round so not a huge difference. I have no .40 caliber guns but have shot a m&p .40 compact and found no excessive recoil or other issues. So the .40 calber doesn't scare me off.

Therefore I am looking for your thoughts on the 4013.

I am keeping the 457 for sure, just looking to possibly add to the collection.

I don't know about any advantage over the 457 (I've never owned one, although I have two 4516s), but I purchased this 4013 new back in 1995. It's a great little pistol. The recoil is a bit snappy, but I imagine that the alloy frame 457 is no slouch in the recoil department either.

I have owned a 457 for a few days. I do not recall why I did not like the 45 caliber value series pistol.

I still own several 4516s, a Shorty 45 MK2 and a recon.

Both my 4013 and 4014 were purchased with the express intent to convert them to fire the 10MM Auto cartridge. I have never warmed up to the 40S&W

With that in mind, I consider the 1013/1014 to be a far better choice than a 457 for personal protection.

The down side to Smith and Wesson's family of single stack 40S&W pistols (4013/4014/4053/4054) is that magazines are becoming harder and harder to find.

If you want a Smith and Wesson pistol chambered in 40, your best bet is one of the double stacks just for the better magazine options.

Well, if you find a large frame 4013... buy it if it has (2) mags. Worry about more mags later, IMO.

It's a plenty strong pistol & doesn't have any of the plastic parts in it that the M457 does (which to me disminishes them). At 29.5oz it's a heavier, & bigger, pistol.

I don't know what advantages you have in mind?

The medium frame 4013TSW are slightly smaller & lighter at 27.5oz. The double stack mags give it a slightly fatter grip. Still plenty strong for the 40 S&W.

I like both & either one would compliment your compact 45.
