Did this pistol come standard with Houge rubber grips? Also are there any other S&W pistols that share the same mag? I don't see the mags listed on S&W's website.

Yes, it was sold with the rubber grips, but, it will take the 3913 LS/NL grips also:

No. The 4040PDs mags are specials. I doubt anyone but S&W will ever make them. They have a special follower with a spring-loaded ball bearing which positions the follower, presumably to insure proper operation of the slide stop. I have never tried to cobble one up, but would hesitate to put much trust in any field-converted magazines.

Hey Jon96
Yes the rubber grips are standard. S&W did that because with that light weight frame and some high test jhp's that gun can really rock the average shooter. As for the mags search gunbroker and gunsamerica. I found brand new mags on gunbroker about 6 months ago. So keep your eye out. Plan to pay 25+ each as S&W laughed at me when I called them for mags. They DC the gun after a few years to focus on the MP projects.

Good luck and Merry Christmas. If I see any at local shows Or shops I will drop you a line

Thanks for the info guys. I spied a used one that appears to be carried a lot- cobble stone pattern on the Houges is worn pretty good(no big deal). I checked the barrel and internals and it is clean. No box and only one mag I was told off hand. Dealer is asking the typical CA price of 450. I have bought several pistols from them, so I will maybe make an offer for 375.

I would appreciate that Maine Garda... if I happen to buy it

I'll keep ya' posted.

Jon96 - If the gun is in decent shape, the price is not entirely out of line. The stocks can be replaced easily. 4040s don't sell for peanuts around here, and we're a long way from CA. Anything close to $400 would seem like a good buy.

4040s are really great little guns. I can't explain it, but the recoil is not as bad as I thought it might be. Mine seems to be reliable, it shoots to point of aim, and shoots very well, too. With Win STHPs in it, you could hit a quarter every time at 7 yards if you can hold and squeeze up to the gun's capability. My only concern is how long it will last.

Just read it BM1. Thanks a lot. I did buy it and should receive it in a month. I might just get a set of new Hogues eventually.

There was one thing I forgot to gloss over- does this pistol use tritium sights or the standard sights on the 908, 457 etc.? I plan on getting Trijicon night sights for my 908... I imagine the 4040 might accept 3913 ones?

S&W parts listing from their web site shows the same Novak rear sight for both
the 3913 and the 4040 but the front sights are different. S&W Parts Listing
3913 front is listed as .204 on page 57.
4040 front is listed as .228 on page 76.
I can not imagine a .40 S&W printing higher than a 9 m.m. that would cause you to need a taller front sight.

Also from the web site there are two rear night sights listed for the 3913, none at all for the 4040.
I'm quite sure there is a proper set for the 4040, they listed them in the 2003 catalog - HERE on page 8.

3913:
109070000 - Front Sight .204
263010000 - Front Night Sight .232
107920000 - Rear Sight - Novak
203140000 - Rear Night Sight
262970000 - Rear Night Sight .377

4040:
109090000 - Front Sight .228
107920000 - Rear Sight - Novak

If you're going to order night sights from S&W, call and tell them which specific model gun it is for which you want the sights. The reason is that they change their night sights faster than the catalog can be updated, depending on vendor supply and revisions (I'm told).

There's been more than a couple of times I've called to order some night sights and I was told that the part number I gave them had been changed due to a revision in the sights. One of them was because a dimension had been changed at the request of S&W. Their in-house computer parts list contains more complete & current info than that which they send out or post on their website.

Fastbolt,
Why is the front sight on the 4040 listed as using a taller one than the 3913?
Does that make any sense?
