I bird dogged a LGS owner about another local pawn shop having a retired Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer selling several guns. One was a S&W99 special made for the CMPD (I posted about that model in a previous post) and two 4046s.

The owner bought the S&W99 and one of the 4046s; today I bought the other 4046. The pawn shop owner wanted it gone and gave me a great deal on it.

That LGS owner left me a copy of the American Riflemen from 1991 that contained an article about Charlotte Police Department becoming the first department in the country to adopt the 40S&W and the gun they chose was the 4046.
(History note: The CMPD was formed from the merger of the Charlotte Police department and the Mecklenburg Country Police Department in 1993.)

NCBeagle suggested I share the article to the forum, so on the advice of council I've attached the article to this post in .pdf format.
(If this violates a rule then please let me know and I'll take it down)

Interesting. I would have thought the 4006 would have been the first 40 used by Law Enforcement.

Neat article and pictures! A few things I'll mention.

First is that your pistol sure looks high condition for an issued gun. Or was this an extra or leftover? Also note that from the pictures, it does not appear to be marked by the department at all, that's a bummer. I always find that to be a neat addition.

My final comment is on the photo from the magazine article. First is that I have to chuckle at the 1991 hair-do on the lady officer. But more to the point... even though the photo is grainy when you zoom, it certainly looks like the 4046 in her shooting hands still has the round, white inspection sticker on the frame, it is under the slide stop and forward of the grip.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it certainly looks like they quite specifically planned a "photo shoot" for some promotional purposes when they set up this picture. These are details that only crazy S&W pistol aficionados would spot. :D

Thanks for posting!

I am glad that you posted the article. Was a good read and a lot of folks here will enjoy it. I know that you got a screaming deal on that pistol.

Many thanks for the posting. I'll be reading this at my leisure after dinner.

But two quick thoughts -- one, my 4046 has the Brinks logo on the right side and it works just fine and I tried (and it worked) replacing the 4046 slide with a 410 slide for them what likes a belt and suspenders and an "additional" safety on their DAO pistols; and two, the lady officer is wearing a nice looking ring. My oldest had his wedding band tatooed on his finger because, as a firefighter, no rings allowed. Surprised LEO doesn't have the same rule.

Again, thanks for the posting. (I think I'll be petting my 4046 while reading the piece.)
