I have a 40c and I wa thinking about trading it for a 9c. What's yalls opinions of both guns?

I have both and love both. I will admit that the 40C is a bit more of a handful. "Poppier" than the 9mm. However, I do like it. The 9C has perfect balance for it's size and I like it a tad more.

Wait, I thought you have to get the conversion barrel for the 40c to go 9mm. You are saying all that is needed is the regular 9mm barrel?

I loved my 40c until I shot a 9c. Ugh. That thing is a joy. They are both great guns but darn if that 9c doesn't feel just about perfect.

Yes, a regular 9c barrel...
A regular 9c barrel($65 when available) and a 9mm magazine. Either the 12 round compact or 17 round full size($29). Your choice!

+1 on Lost Lake response. It is that simple. No reason to sell or trade and take a hit when you can have both for the cost of a factory barrel (and consider mags per Lost Lake)
I have both compact and full size mags in both .40 and 9mm to use in my 40c and optional factory 9mm barrel.
4 guns in 1.

If you have shot 9mm and are comfortable with 9mm. You will have no problem with the 40c. The 40c and 9c have such a great design and feel to em.
I did quite a bit of research before purchasing a .40 and going with the M&P 40c. Now that I have 40c, I a very pleased with it. Im almost ready to take the plunge on that .357Sig barrel!!

I did feel the $$ difference on .40 ammo cost....
So I got into reloading and haven't looked back. I can now make 250 QUALITY 9mm rounds for about $32...250 QUALITY .40 rounds for $36. No Walmart for me anymore

will the conversion work the other way around? dropping a stock 40c barrel into a 9c and just buying the mags?

damn, I've been waiting for weeks for the Storm Lake conversion barrels to come back into stock when I could have just ordered the regular one now for less than half the price!

Conversions ONLY work on the 40 and 40c.
Theres a few technical details that I won't go into....
Basically, you can put the smaller 9mm barrels on the larger M&P 40 and 40c even though S&W makes no mention or publication of this. The M&P 40's are designed to accept the .357Sig barrel. The .40 magazine will accept the .357Sig bullet with no modification needed. The mags are stamped "40 S&W.357" which is kinda cool.
The S&W M&P 9 and 9c does NOT accept any other barrel size that I know of. So the 9mm cannot be converted to any other caliber.

Yeah, I thought I had read elsewhere in this forum that you couldn't just put the factory 9mm barrel in the 40c. I'll have to do a search again. Also, wouldn't there be an issue with the recoil spring? It's weighted for the .40 cal round, not the 9mm, so I would think it would be too heavy for the 9mm.

Research is your friend.
It has been posted many times here, and on other forums, that the factory S&W barrels work for the .40 to 9mm, .40 to .357, .357 to .40, and .357 to 9mm conversions.
Another option that I really like is, using full size mags in the compact with the addition of the X-Grip. Sweeet!

So are you saying I can use the factory .40 mags and they should work with the 9mm ammo with the exception of what you said? My 9mm bullets pop right out of the top of the magazine. I have to load one in the barrel at a time right now. I didn't buy any 9mm mags.
I got my barrel in today and everything went perfectly. Shot great.

I just went and put my new, un-fired 9mm barrel in my 40c, loaded up a compact 40 mag and a full size 40 mag and hand cycled them. My mags will hold the 9mm cartridges but just barely, just by the head. I had one compact mag that the follower kept getting hung up on something, but only when loaded with 9mm. The full size mag and another compact worked just fine, with the usual locking back before chambering final round. I haven't had any problems with any mags while shooting 40cal. I have 2 9mm full size mags on the way, hopefully get them tomorrow. I am going to hold off shooting until I get them.
