Are these grips "Checkered Walnut Service Stocks" (as per SCSW 5th) that would have been the factory original grips on a Model 681? Thanks in advance.

Those are P.C. aka Plain Clothes Magnas. They could have come from any K or L frame revolver. They usually were installed on fixed sight snub nose guns, so if your 681 is a 2 1/2", possibly.

Service stocks are the shorter pre war style.
Yours are PC Magnas from the 70's to 80s era.

If you google Smith 681 alot are wearing the same PC Magnas,
Dont think its a coincidence so bet they shipped standard on the 681.

SCSW 5th says that they were manufactured with "Checkered Walnut Service Stocks". I have already lettered this revolver and the letter states "Checkered Walnut Square Butt Stocks". I have looked at many pictures and I agree with your conclusion that the PC Magnas were probably the factory issue.
