It depends on what you are shooting them out of. I used to have a Glock 22. Recently gave it away to the son in law.

I loaded all of my self defense ammo too. Any JHP with the maximum load of SR4756 was my choice. It gave me just at 1000fps and kept the pressure down where a KB was very unlikely.

I was just looking at my records earlier tonight and see I tried Longshot and should I get another Glock, I will work up a load using it. I can get the same velocity with a minimum charge of it as I do with a maximum load of SR4756. That being said, I have a bunch more SR4756 than I do Longshot so getting to that may be a while! ;)

Actually, a 40S&W with a 180gr bullet @ 1000fps gives near(qualifying part of statement) the same thump as a 357Mag with a 158gr @ 1200fps and you have a bunch more rounds to go along with it.

Now, it's not pretty nor is it a hunting firearm, but for self defense, I'll take more bullets in the same frame size any day! ;)

Evan Marshall's data on actual shootings favor a 150-155 gr load for combat. For civil liability, I only carry factory loads, save the reloads for practice. I'm old school, 6 gr of Unique works with a 180 gr bullet.

I've been loading 40 S&W since 1990. Got one of the first of the 4006s. I still have some of the original Winchester 180gr JHPs that were designed for it, and the later 155gr Silvertips. Also more than a few boxes of Black Talons remain ;).

It is a good SD cartridge. I prefer loading 165gr bullets these days. I tried a lot of powders early on, AA#2 and 5, Unique, a few others. Some early loads published for it in gun mags were a little hot, especially once Glock started chambering it and the problems with their design became known. I still have the references. However, ever since it's introduction I've been loading with WSF as my favored powder. It's reliable, clean, consistent, meters well and I've never had a problem with it.

A friend of mine went to Alaska this year and wanted to take her 4053, the only pistol she had. I pulled out some of the old references and loaded up some 175gr LSWCs for her with Blue Dot that chrono'd 1090fps, with an ES of 20, out of the 4053. They are a little on the hot side by today's standard, but were for a "need the most out of what you got" situation.
