I need to buy some 41 mag rounds for personal defense. They can be for hunting too but not needed to be.
I am looking at the speer 210gr gold dot ammo and double tap's 210gr nosler jhp. Any body care to weigh in on these two.
I can buy the double taps for a good price also.

IIRC, Speer designed the 210 GD for hunting. Don't know about the Nosler, but I can't see how it wouldn't be good for SD just because of it's 'probable' high velocity.

I think both are excellent choices, I like Gold Dots. but Nosler makes excellent bullets as well. If you can try both and use what your gun shoots best with. Hope this helps.

I've done expansion testing on both and the Gold Dots open a lot faster than the Nosler... That being said in .41 Magnum there are better rounds for hunting than the Gold Dots.

For self-defense I would go Gold Dot, Silvertip or the Federal 180 Barnes. From a 4" barrel the Gold Dots were 1180, Silvertips 1225 and the Federal 1320 but the recoil was very mild compared to the full charged 210 hunting rounds like the Remington 210 SP.

Finding a bullet that will open up rapidly for self-defense use in the .41 can be somewhat challenging. For all round use my money would go with the Gold Dots...

Great info, thanks! The Nosler #6 doesn't mention anything, as well as almost all the other load books (re. .41 Mag.) I have. They'll get into all this 'history', almost like they're quoting from each other, but nothing specific about their projectiles.

If you look at the most successful SD round, the 125 grain .357 Magnum at 1400+ fps and try to duplicate the sectional density to the .41 and .44 Magnums you get bullet weights of 170 and 180 grains. There is a problem however...the bullets available are all "hunting" bullets that don't open up fast enough for two-legged-predator use.

If there was a bullet made to rapidly open at 1300-1400 fps in the .41 and .44 those would make very effective one-shot-stoppers. The closest in the .41 Magnum are the 175 Silvertip at 1225 and the 170 CorBon (that uses the 170 Sierra) at 1275...these would have a much better track reconds at 1350 fps... There was a load that was only out for a year that probably would have been THE SD load...the 170 Remington Scollop Jacketed HP... I found a couple of boxes at a gun show last year and they are running in the 1300 from a 4" barrel.

Speer makes a 200 grain .44 Gold Dot HP made for the .44 Special....it has a very very deep HP... At .44 Special velocities it doesn't open up... Speer loads this bullet in the .44 Magnum Short Barrel Load at 1080 fps and it turns inside out every time... If Speer would come up with a 170-180 .41 HP with a DEEP HP like the old .41 Action Express bullet they had that would be a winner in the .41...

950-1250-1400 fps impact velocity...

Thank you everyone, especially Superman. That was the input I was looking for. I went with the speer for PD. I am gonna make my next purchase on some heavy hunting ammo. Any input on that.

Heavy hunting loads for the .41Magnum? My favorite factory load is the Federal 250gr. Cast-core. I've tried the 265s and SSK 275gr and have gotten it all done with the 250grWFNGC.

P.S. for PD with my 357PD, I use either the Winchester 175gr.ST or the Corbon 180gr.DPX.
