has anybody ever chronographed the 41 mag Remington police load from a M-58 or 4 inch M-57? I think it was rated at 950 fps but I don't remember if they were using the "vented" barrel. I use 7.5 grains of Unique with a 215 grain swc and that is an average of 1,000 fps out of a 4 inch M-57. I think that is a little high for the police load.

I use 8.0 grains of Unique with a 210-230 and get 950-975 from 4" barrels.... I believe the original Police load was 950 from a 4" and something like 1020 from a 6". I have some left but hate shooting it because it leads so badly...

Its enough to make you want to roll your own. The lack of affordable and low recoil ammo is probably the big reason the .41 isn't more popular. It can do almost anything the 44 can, but with less recoil. Tests in the past have revealed the 41 actually penetrates more (if that's your goal.)

I guess I should add mild 41s to my list of things to load way too many of. 44 Specials are generally in the 800-900fps range. I'd think 210 grain jacketed bullets in that same speed range would be nice without giving up much effectiveness.

I shot up all the original Remington "Police Load" .41s that I got in a gun deal about five years ago.
Didn't chrono any. Shot them in a six-inch M57, an M58 and a couple of Ruger Redhawks.

I have chronoed my old pin load 210 grain bullets, Unique powder, CCI or Remington large pistol primers. They reached 1050 fps.
Recoil of the police loads was a bit lighter, as was muzzle blast.

The only thing I remember about the "Police Load" from a past life when I was carrying a Model 58 as a duty weapon was it leaded the bore "Big Time".

+1 on what jimmyj said. I also carried a model 58 with police loads and they would lead up the barrel in short order. We switched to Rem 210's and department dumped the guns soon due to recoil and ammo costs.

When I was with Dallas PD officers were allowed to carry handloads...really. The 11 years I was there I never once carried factory ammo.

When I got out of the academy the officer who had the locker next to mine carried a Model 58. He also didn't like the Police load and used his own load of I believe a 210 Hornady JHP (the original not the XTP) with enough powder to make 1000 fps. One night he shot an armed robber in the ally behind some stores. Center punched the guy and he went down DRT. The bullet went right through the BG and took a chunk out of the brick wall behind him....and then bounced down the ally... A year or so later the officer was hired by US Secret Service....

When I carried a .41, and I carried two different 57s and a 58 over the years, it was a hardcast SWC with 8.0 grains of Unique... Today I would carry the Speer 210 Gold Dot or the Federal 180 Barnes... Both expand fast and have less blast and recoil than most of the other factory loads..

I was under the impression that Remington came out with a harder lead bullet to cure the leading problem however the change came too late to save it? I thought that I had read somewhere but right now I don't remember where.

My standard load is the cast swc and 7.0 of Unique. It sure played havoc with on old stove and refrigerator I shot at once.

Groo here
One load I am working on is a top load of Trailboss with Mag or WW
Primers.
I find that a hotter primer gives better burning and grouping.

+1 For that load! I tried 8.0 of Unique with a 215 grain case lead SWC and found it somewhat lacking in accuracy. Then down to 7.5 of Unique and accuracy improved. I then went to 7.0 and found much better accuracy and a load that is fun to shoot.

I've shot my M-57 x 4" very little.

The two loads I used were 5.6grs of W231 and 6.5grs of W231 with 210gr SWCs. Both were VERY pleasant to shoot. Didn't get the chrono out that day, so can't speak to real velocities, but I'm betting the 5.6gr load was about 700-750fps and the 6.5gr load was around 850fps. I wouldn't want to be shot by either load! ;)

SuperMan is correct.
Also what he did not say, was that for many years, he provided handloaded ammo, for several Dallas Police Officers, that carried 41 Mags, and later ammo for the 45 Colt S&W revolvers.

We had to carry factory ammo. My choice was the Silvertips.

..I had never seen that before...thanks.... But as soft as that lead was I don't think even if the bullets were the correct size that it would have helped...

Hi:
From my LGS I just purchased a 50 round box of Remington 210 grain lead .41 Magnum ammo index#1141. Green and white box for $40.00.
This has been in a sealed container for years.
I was hoping for a box of JSP but took what was available.
I did not have any .41 Magnum rounds but discovered a S&W Model 657-2 hiding in my "Catch All" closet.

I couldn't afford "store bought" ammo back when I was a LEO and packin' a 58. I got one box of factory loads when I bought the gun.. I shot it and carried hand loads from then on.

I loaded a 210 JHP to 950FPS. It was a very effective round in every application.
