I recently acquired a S&W model 422 .22LR pistol. Upon pressing the magazine release I have to "pull" the magazines out. It doesn't take much effort but I was wondering if they were supposed to be like that or if they were intended to drop free. Also, does the pistol have a magazine safety?

As you can tell I haven't shot the pistol yet, nor do I have a manual. Any idea where I might get a pdf copy of the manual? S&W website didn't have one.

I just ran 6 magazines (all 10 round) through a 422 and 622 and not only do they drop free, they practically shoot out. This series of pistol does have a magazine safety. I have read about people removing them, but never have personally. I don't have a problem with removing magazine safeties, it's just that my 422 has a really good trigger pull with it in place.

I'd start with stripping the slide off, without it in place it is much easier to see into the magwell. Check for any thing that might be binding the mag. It could just use a good cleaning. The other thing I would recommend is verifying that the side plate screws are tight.

Looks like it was a combination of a little crud buildup and the grip screws on the right grip panel being overtightened and protruding into the magazine well.

All good now.

Thanks
