I can't believe that I had to purchase another box of Garrett Defender 310gr ammo so soon. I don't reload and have no intention of ever doing so or do I complain about the price of this high quality ammo. I swore when I got the first box that due to the expense of this ammo I would only fire a few rounds to see where it shot but I would save it to only use for emergency bear encounter defense out in the wild. BUT I loved shooting it so much that low and behold I went through a box of 50 in a few months, so not wanting to be without this in my 629-6 5" while out shed antler hunting in bear country ( North of Yellowstone Park ) I ordered another box which this time I swear I will make last longer. I hope to practice more with something like Federal 300gr hardcast ammo and save the Defender ammo for more the more serious situations.

The Garrett Defender shoots good groups with mild recoil for quick follow-up shots for the those emergency bear encounters we never hope we have.

No questions here but just stating my experience with .44mag Garrett Defender ammo.

I too have the 629-6 5".

I am going to order a box as well and have been looking at Garrett for some time.

I hope it kicks!

A friend of mine bought a box of 330gr. Hammerheads for use in his blued Redhawk 10 or 15 years ago. I think that there are still 44 cartridges left in the box....

I tell you what, if west Nashville is ever in danger of being overrun by rabid water buffalo, rhinoceros, or dinosaurs... he's ready!!

Garrett makes very good hunting ammo but like you said, it's also very expansive. I highly suggest you find a less expansive alternative for practice ammo, that stuff is just too costly to kill paper with!

Blazer makes a 240gr JHP round for ~$28/50 rounds. I think those are just about the cheapest you will find in factory ammo. Prvi Partiza has a 300gr JHP round for ~$31/50 rounds that might be more like the Garrett round you shoot.

Randy Garrett makes great ammo.

His bullets are the hardest lead bullets I have ever seen.

And I cast mine out of straight linotype...

I would not substitute any cheapo generic JHP bullet. They are not in the same league. But you're probably just as well off with the Federal cast bullet load.

My suggestion was for practice only, not for carry or hunting...

Have you ever chronoed that load in your 5"? I wonder how fast it is.

I handload 280 grain HardCasts in my 5" -4 that do 1235 fps.

Two of us were flyfishing NW of Chouteau Sunday; 44s and BearSpray at the ready.
