Looking for your favorite 44 mag recipe for 240 gr LSWC hard cast.

Depending on barrel lenght, anywhere from 9.5 to 10.5 grains of Unique for 1000 fps is an excellent all around load for practice, defense, and game up to deer (I have taken two deer with that load). I have found that load to be accurate in every 44 Mag I have ever owned. It is not a knuckle buster, but it does get the job done!!! Only a 250 Keith will make that load better.

Also one of my favorites - 10 gr. Unique with a hard cast Keith 250 grainer. I have killed 4 deer with this load. I have never recovered a bullet and made the kills with one shot (the ones that hit the deer, misses don't count!). It is also a very pleasant load to shoot, easy on the shooter and the equipment and reasonably accurate. I used to be able to hit a one gallon milk jug regularly at 100 yards when I was in top form.

7.0 of Unique is a very nice plinker.

In a magnum case with a non magnum primer...

7g W231 for @ 900 fps.

22g W296 for @ 1200 fps.

10.0 gr WSF, a WLP primer, and a good 240 gr LSWC. Velocity is a about 1050fps.

Work your way up to 10gr of Unique...

Pick the load that give you the accuracy/recoil you desire...

Loads with H110/W296, and I know this is a change for me, have been proving more accurate and consistent than just about anything else.

Lil' Gun will get you there with less pressure but I haven't found it to be more accurate, especially with plain base lead bullets.

It depends on what I am shooting them out of. The Unique loads above are good for "near magnum" performance and are easier on the shooter!

For real magnum loads I use one of three powders, H110/W296, AA#9 or WC820. The latter is a MILSURP powder that loads like AA#9 or H110/W296 depending on powder lot number.

I use loads from the manual for those rounds. Nothing out of the ordinary there for me. The Hodgdon site has some good information for H110/W296 loads. Most of the bullets I use are in the 240gr JSP/JSPHP configuration.

Carbine loads lately have been 26gr H110/W296 under a 200gr LRNFP from a Lee 6 cavity mold cast semi-hard. Near 1900fps from a rifle and over 1300fps from a M629 5"bbl.

There's some interesting numbers here. I haven't started reloading my .44 yet. And when I was reloading other things it was 20 years ago. so just for kicks I looked at my Speer #10 dtd1979. It shows 7 grs of Unique with a 240gr lead in bold - like it's a top load.
Needless to say, I'll be updating long before I'm reloading, it just goes to show how things change.

21 gr 2400 with the same bullet for hunting.

21 grains 2400 and a Keith bullet, drops from my moulds a little over 260 grains. Hits a shade over 1300 fps from my 6 inch 29.

Do you have a rifle you can shoot those loads out of? Just wondering what kind of results you would get from that same load in a longer barrel.
