44 Mag Me

44 Magnum

Ive been reloading for the 44mag for over 20 yrs now & i have to say that its a really fun round to load for i mainly use the Ramshot Enforcer or Hodgon h-110 & Accurate No9 .Ive found that the med range charges are the most accurate & still has more than enough knockdown to kill deer or black bear size game IMHO the H-110 is a little rough to shoot is has a muzzleflash like a atom bomb & the recoil is not terrible buy youre know youre shooting it :)

I started reloading for the .44 in the 70's. Unique was good, but too dirty and the flakes did not meter well. I think 2400 was the most accurate in my 4" S&W, but it left too much un burnt powder which fouled the ejector rod causing a jam.

I use IMR 4756 and 7625 for medium to light loads, cleaner, meters well and hard to double charge unnoticed.

For heavy loads, H110 or 296 is the way to go.

I use Cast Performance Lead and Berry bullets for medium loads

I use any of the major brands in SP for heavy loads, JHP for defense loads.

We have been incorporated since 1992 and I have been personally been casting bullets for 40 years.

+1 for Dardas bullets here.

I recently started ordering the 240gr SCW from them sized at .432 and they are top notch. I loaded another 400 or so this morning so I'll be getting some more soon.

I'm using 2 different loads in my 29s and having great results with no leading.
10grains of Unique is moving my loads at just over 1100fps in a 4 inch 29-2 or 629-2 Mountain gun.
19grains of 2400 is moving them at 1177fps in the 4 inch guns.
For the increased recoil I feel with the 2400 load and so little increased velocity in the 4 inch guns I'll reserve that load for a 6 inch gun or longer.

Hi, for the past 15 months I have been shooting, several light 44magnum loads with Hogdon Titegroup power, Federal No.150 primers, Berry's 240gr. JPH (totally plated) and either Remington or W-W 44magnum cases. Titegroup weights are 4.8grs., 8.0grs. and 9.0grs. Velocity and recoil of course depends on many factors including bbl. length, ported or not, weight of gun, grip material, ambient temperature, etc. With a barrel length of not less than 6 inches velocity will average approximately as follows. 4.8grs= 820fps 8.0grs= 1120fps 9.0grs=1220fps. I shoot a Stealth Hunter 7.5" bbl and 56ozs. and the lightest load has very little recoil and the others are quite managable even for an old guy like me. Good shooting.

Checked my cylinder and found all holes were .429 one or two .4295 so would I order lead bullets in the .430 or the .429's?

I hit the fun show and there were no 44 lead bullets to be found, NONE. I bought the only bag of 44 mag brass on the floor. Some is better than none I guess. As far as jacketed fodder the only offering was Hornady 240 XTP's so of course I grabbed em up.

Smith Crazy (what a gentleman)I sent you a PM on your offer and it sounds good. I just caught the part where you said to move. I would pull pole and move if momma would agree. Almost there. Kind of tough to pull the chitins' away from the grand folks too. Sometimes I can't stand this restrictive state.

Your question about which sized diameter can only be answered after you slug your barrel. You have indicated that your cylinder throats are at 0.4295" (largest). Your barrel hopefully will slug out at 0.4280" and not larger than 0.4285". For you see, the cast bullet must be at least 0.001" larger than the bore diameter. However, the bullet can not be larger than the largest cylinder throat.

I trust that I have helped you.
