Midrange 44mag loads

19 grains of Univeral Clays with any 240 gr lead SWC has been very good for me. I use large pistol primers, NOT magnum primers. Groups about 1" at 50 yards, and has moderate recoil.

You call that mid-range ? What charge do you use for full power ?

You're right, that is kinda stout. I have loaded some up to 20.2gr w/2400. It should have read...17gr of 2400 w/240gr SWC...nice.

That's not to say that 19gr 2400 is a bad thing though.

My 3" 629 likes 240 SWC over 7.5 Unique. 828 fps

I also use a lot of 5gr of Titegroup for plinking 675 fps. Everyone who shoots it likes this load, No kick no blast.

6gr of Titegroup for 875 is a pretty good do all load.

If I want it to kick a bit, 11gr of Unique gets me 1100 but I don't shoot many of those.

The most I can get out of this is 1300 with 240 SJSP over 24.2 H-110. The blast is INCREDIBLE!

Try 9.5 grains of Universal under a 200-210 grain bullet.
11 grains of Universal under a Sierra 210 JHC is also
accurate. Sadly this bullet is no more. I have used it for
decades with success.
Most of the Unique/Universal recipes in the 6-8 grain range
are good too. You just have to do some development in your
particular weapon. Something will pop out as spectacular along
the way.

An example: Which one would you choose?

I actually have settled on 26 grains for this recipe as the
Redhawk shoots one hole groups and the MG is very close to
the groups you see here. Less pressure is always good and a
cartridge that shoots well in all your weapons becomes a local
standard.

Couple others that made it:

Developing loads is a really good excuse to shoot a lot of ammo :)
I enjoy both the load and the unload. It's a satisfying hobby
that has kept me interested for more than 30 years.

This HAS to be a typo. MAX load for Universal in the .44 mag with that bullet is 10.2 grains (from Hodgdon's website).

If you meant 9 grains, that would make more sense.

Must be!!!

I have used unique, green dot, and vihvatouri 3N37 ( pretty sure I jacked that spelling up). Can't remember charge weights but all were plenty accurate. 3N37 was actually faster and more accurate for me, and it went through the powder measure like a dream.

Don't do this! This is way, way over max. I doubt you could even get that much clays into a case.

A quick simulation in QuickLOAD shows you are right on all counts.
It's nearly a 130% case fill and if it could be done would lead to somewhere around 120KPSI!
That's nearly 3.5 times the maximum pressure for a 44 magnum and 2x any round I know of.
That has to be a typo.
