Post some pictures that show the condition of the gun. Is it refinished? Any rust or pits? Condition is the key to value, and a 5 1/2 in. barrel smacks of a cut job to me. Is it single action or double action? Ed.
As Ed states, no one can give you date or value without more information and pictures. There were 5 models of S&W models chambered in 44 Russian and 4 of them would have your serial number. The Model 3 Russian Second Model, Model 3 Russian Third Model, New Model 3, and the 44 Double Action First Model all had their own serial numbering systems.
Pictures will help very much in identifying what model you have, the condition, ship date, and value.

Your serial number puts the ship date right around the turn of the century, from 1896 to 1901. Guns were not shipped in order, so the only way to get exact date would be to get a factory letter. Value would be dependent on condition, so hope you can post pictures soon.
There are a few ways to do it, but here is what I like. Open a new reply and add your comments, then scroll down to "Manage Attachments". Click on Browse to find the pictures on your computer, then click upload. Wait for the picture to complete, then repeat the process until you post up to 5 photos max. Hit submit reply and you should see all text and photos.
