44 snakeshot

Tenn2, I'm with you on this one...I'd like to find some snake shot in either the 45 LC or .41 mag.

I was under the impression that they were only made in 44 special so they could be used in a special or magnum as the capsule is the same. I think that is the same with the 38 special and 357 magnum. I have seen plenty of the 38 special loads but never one for a 357 magnum.

And the 9mm stuff is "hot". It will even cycle some actions. I used some in a 547 and it made a bunch of noise.

One caution, its expensive. I'd suggest you buy 2 boxes/trays of the stuff. Then use one to see how it hammers a cardboard box at different ranges. My 9mm stuff was pretty good out a 15 feet. Much beyond that the performance stops being a pattern and just blows wide open. Still seems to penetrate the cardboard just fine, but where is kind of a gamble.

My experience has been the 38 stuff is weak and not worth it. The 9mm and 44 is pretty good at really close ranges. Don't waste your money on the 22/22 mag.

I saw 1 box of 44 spl shot (i think it was 10 rounds) at the Academy Sports in Texarkana last weekend.

My experience has been the larger the caliber and the shorter the barrel the better it works. Long barrels get the stuff spinning too much I think. 45 Auto out of a CS45 works very well.

I reload the .44 shot cartridge. It is a .44-40 case with number 9 shot. I shoot it out of an old Stevens .44 Shot single shot, I think the model number is 101. It is a hoot, and I recently had to dispatch a pesky skunk which took up residence too close to the house. It is a powerful little load. When I get a chance I will look up the recipe and post it. I use egg carton cardboard for the wad and overwad. Should work fine in a modern revolver.

The above reports are correct, CCI sells 44 Spl/Mag snakeshot. There are no separate 44 Special and 44 Magnum snakeshot loads.

I have bought the 38/357 and 45 Colt shotshells 10 per box but they are too hard to find in the stores and when you do fine them, they cost too much IMO. I but the Speer empty shot capsules and I reload my own now... Unfortunately it takes a lot more to load semi-auto shotshells than buying the capsules.

Just a hint, if you don't want to buy a 25lb bag of #9 shot to load up a few dozen shotshells you can open a box of cheap 12ga target shells and yield 28oz of shot... That will fill a lot of snakeshot shells.

Maybe CCI stopped with the .44 mag load. I still have some and they do not fit into a .44 special gun. I have shot a few "things" with that load and it is quite a difference compared to the .38/.357 loads. The CCI .44 special / .44 mag load has blue capsule, the .44 mag only has a yellow capsule.

CCI hasn't made 44 MAG shotshells for a long time, maybe 15-20 years. I still have some (with blue capsules). Nowdays, the only loading is 44 Special, which are very available.

Yellow capsules are at least 20 years old, as I've handloaded them for that long and all mine are blue.

The plastic box I have states 44 mag and will not fit in my 44 spec. Do not know how old they but have the blue capsule.
