I got a call from an acquaintance who wants to sell his 696. It has a 3" barrel and said it has a "night sight on the front" with Hogue grips . He said the night sight was was factory, he did not buy it new, I can not locate one in the SCSW.

I thinks its a night sight that has been cut to fit in the dove tail where the orange insert should have been. has anyone seen this before?

I don't know the dash number but I will be meeting him tomorrow to inspect it.

Not factory installed but I have seen the type of installation. Usually they were used for the pistols without the pined front sight blade and are as you noted installed in the insert dovetail. They look a little weird kinda like a camels hump on the blade but seem to work OK.

I'm certain it is a 696. He indicated the front sight looked kinda weird, makes me think its like the one chipking has seen before.

I searched for a photo but didn't find a good example. He did tell me the rear sight was just a normal white outline.

It could be a Meprolight night sight. The front sight is installed into the dovetail after the orange insert is removed. I've installed them on several S&W revolvers with orange insert front sights. I have a picture of one somewhere, that I could post tomorrow.
