I've been trying to figure out which big bore I want for a target gun. At first I thought I wanted a 1911 then went cold on that after I bought one. I like the 45 ACP but realized I would be happier with a 6" revolver. I have an older 6" model 19 that I like a lot with the target hammer and trigger. So now I've got it nailed down, I want a target model 44 Special.

So now which one. I like the 24. I also like the 24 classics that I see. My only concern are parts if I need them. Are barrels, hammers etc. available for the older 24's? I don't have a problem with MIM and locks and I'm not buying this gun thinking it's an investment. I want to shoot it, a lot. Another concern is the round butt. Are these a problem on a target gun? Can target stocks be had for the classics? I would consider a 25 but I don't really want to mess with clips.

Any suggestions from you target shooters would be welcome.

Or consider a 624 Target.
The 6-1/2" guns are the most common (less spendy) ones.
Mine is a dream to shoot:

Would you consider a 44 mag? You could shoot specials in a competition and for fun and still have the magnums to keep things interesting. It's like 2 guns in one.

Model 24's

I have been shooting 24's for 30 plus years...I have a couple
6" target guns, that have patridge front sights and the T hammer and trigger.....I also have several 4" er's and a couple of the Lew Horton 3" with the RB....I carry one of the LH 24's daily....I haven't had to replace any major parts, so I am unsure about barrel's....but the normal parts can usually be found at Numrich's.....the 44 spl round is a inherently accurate round and I load 240 gr swc's over Unique and I cast a 200 gr wadcutter that I have shot thousands of....On a good day I can cut rat holes into paper targets with the 44 spl....the 24's are great guns and the 44 special is a great cartridge, they will serve you well.

Not a bad idea at all. Especially if you like a bit (or a lot! depending on the configuration) more muzzle heaviness. But I'm fickle and have both.
