44 special

I have a new in box S&W 44 special, blued, never fired, have original purchase slip (bought in 1955). What's it worth?

Welcome to the Forum. It depends. What is the barrel length? Are all the tools & papers in the box? What's the serial number? What does the label on the box end say? Ed.

Target sights and a barrel rib? (Or no rib?) Or fixed sights? Color of box?

Barrel length, measured from the front of the cylinder to muzzle?

Is the box marked with the SAME serial number as the one on the BUTT of the gun? Does the box say Model of 1926? Model of 1950?

See the problem? A wee bit more info would be nice. There were more than one model revolver in 44 Special that might have been purchased new in 1955 and value will vary greatly depending on exact model and features (barrel length, etc).

The most likely suspect would be the 4th Model 44 Target with a 6.5" barrel. In truly new in box condition it could bring $2,000+ with ease. If it is a less produced model or if it has a less common barrel length then value goes up.

It's tough being new to the hobby isn't it?
If that S&W 44 spl is a fixed sight gun, and has a serial number that begins with a letter "S", it may be a 44 HE or model of 1950. Also known as a pre 21.

I'm thinking your four models are really 8 when you go to separating target models from fixed sight or "military" models. And the values go all over the place, as does the rarity. Then if we start separating them by barrel length, it gets really confusing. And just about the time you feel comfortable with that, lets double it by separating them by finish. Now we're really cooking!

A new in the box 1950 Target has got to be worth well over two grand I would think, a pre 21, what ever the market will bear.
It's amazing that these guns still show up new in the box. Gives one a new desire to keep up the search.
