I finished-up my lunch hour range session, and made the mistake of actually looking in the cases on my way out. They had two new 442s side by side: one with the extra hole in the frame, and the other without. They were priced identically. The latter one came home with me. Don't need it (I have 5 J-frames), but I like it.

442, there's nothing wrong with any of the Centennials

And "need" has nothing to do with this subject!

I should NOT have looked! I just traded my 642 fir a 686-6, but have always loved the J frame. Been fighting the urge, but these pics just pushed me over the edge, lol!

The only revolvers I've owned in recent years were a 686-6 and a 642-1. Sold the 686 to my neighbor. The 642-1 gets daily carry around home and walking distances from home.

My first purchased firearm was a Model 36 and I always regretted trading it back in 1995. The 642 helps a bit to put aside that regret.

I'm the opposite, traded the 642 and another gun on a used 686-6, realized how much I missed my J-frame companion, just picked up a M36 from about 1970. I happy.

I like very much and am considering a 442. Was wondering about the finish on them. is it a very durable bluing/blacking that will not easily wear over time? Handled one recently and like the ergonomics.

I think that the 36 is about the neatest, most accurate fun to shoot J in existence.
I looked at a new centennial and it was a mess. It looked and felt like it had been epoxy coated with sand, the action was so bad that it would almost lock up in DA. What a joke compared with an older pistol. It is like a person who made toasters sat there and slapped a bunch of poor fitting pieces together and ....it seemed to work. OK into the box and gone to someone. No thanks.

I've had my 442-2 for about ten years, carry it daily. in a leather OWB pancake holster, and it doesn't have a mark on it.

Be Thankful

That you live where you can see a good buy and walk out with it. My wife and I just bought a 642 and 442, both new w/o locks in California. We took them home 3+ weeks later. Order time, waiting time, hard copy and computer form filling time was almost 12 hours, and then we had to wait in another long line to get some ammo with almost no selection. In summary, we are too old to move or we would.

"we are too old to move or we would."
That reminded me of the Hoyt Axton song "Smokey Factory Blues" that Steppenwolf did a nice job on; only a slight difference in the lyrics.
This 442 subject came up here today. I bought one for my daughter for birthday last summer & she took right to it. I want to give my youngest one for Christmas this year, if she likes it. Just gotta look around. I'd like to find one for me, too. They're nice little shooters.

I think the 442 and the 642 are ideal for pocket carry. Not so heavy as to weigh you down, snag-free drawing, and perfect for close-quarters defense.

Here are my two - the 442 does not have the ugly hole - the 642 does, but I removed the offending internal parts for it.

Both of these guns are equipped with Barami HipGrips - the prefect solution for pocket carry. Here is a shot of the way I carry them - the grip is above the pocket, but the bulk of the gun is below in the pocket. With the shirt tail out, it disappears and does not interfere with sitting down in the least.

I just machined a 442 cylinder for CCW HD moon clips. Guy in California's gun with a lot of miles on it, carry and shooting, finish was still in pretty good shape.
