Hello all. I'm new to the forum, joining in anticipation of purchasing a 442 or 642 after years with a sig semi. I've never owned a revolver and have been scouring this site for info. Thanks.

I have seen references to people carrying a "pre-lock" version of the above guns. Could someone please tell me what lock is new? when was it added? What is benefit/detriment? Thanks!

S&W added a key lock that locks the gun and renders it un usable until it is unlocked with the key. S&W has recently (as I just spoke to their rep 5 minutes ago) started producing the 642, 442, and the pro series j frames, and will start making some of the M&P j frames w/o the lock due to the over whelming response distributors had concerning the sales of the no lock guns. the distributors have actually jacked the price up about 25 dollars for the no lock guns and I reckon this is to try to sell the IL (internal lock) guns and not be stuck with them because if a person has a choice they will usually opt for a no lock gun. Hope this helps you!

The other two things about the internal lock is that they are unsightly and could fail an lock your gun when you need it most.

There have been new 442/642 available without the ILS. Bought one myself 1-2 years back. Same price as a ILS revolver.

Then there are those of us who own guns with the IL and have nothing negative to say about it.

Thanks everyone. Thanks blujax, you're the only one to not put a negative post about the locks, though I suspect many feel the same. I have 2 small kids at home and current gun stays at bedside with trigger lock at night. Safety from prying hands over speed. I have read a multitude of reviews, articles and studies and so far none have found a single instance of the lock wrongly engaging on the 642/442 models. Seems like a good safety for my situation, but I truly appreciate everyone's input about the locks. Thanks again.
