S&W 442 Finish
I prefer the dark finish of the 442. As I understand it, the 442 cylinder and barrel are not blued. Rather, they have an "ion bond" (I forget the exact name but this is close I think) finish, same as the 340 M&P steel cylinder. I believe I was told this by S&W a few years ago.
The finish of the barrel and cylinder on my 442 does not appear to be blued, not even a matt bluing. It does appear to be more like a black coating. The finish on the entire gun has been very durable to date, without even any appreciable holster wear.
