I could use some advice from anyone who has owned or had experience with both of these. I really want a 45 acp 625 Mountain gun but of course they are few and far between and may fetch a higher price than I'll want to pay (looks like it will take close to $1000 to get close to one on GB...IF you can find one!). The current production 625 PC has a similar profile and aside from the IL and the hideous looking stocks (which can be replaced) it might be a good option? Thoughts?

I suppose there are several considerations, such as type of use. For carrying/defense, definitely the MG. For target/range use, then the PC wins. As far as the availability, price and the IL, that's more of a personal decision. The 625 MG in .45 ACP and .45 Colt are perhaps my favorite Smiths. I don't do locks. YMMV.

Overall I agree...I'd definitely prefer a MG. I already have MGs in 45 Colt and 357 mag and love them both. I'll probably try to be patient and hold out for the 45 acp MG as well. That said, I do own one PC revolver (model 327, with IL) and I must admit it is a really nice shooter. I am curious as to why you feel the 625 pc would be inferior for defense/carry? It has a 4" barrel and I assume similar weight to a 625 MG, so why would it not be suitable for defense?

I can't speak for JT, but I will guess that his concern for CCW or personal defensive use is the internal lock and the possiblity of it failing at a crucial moment and locking the gun up, unable to be fired.

I don't trust the lock for crisis use, but removing it and filling the hole with "the plug" would eliminate any concern over that, for me.

Not wanting to engage yet again in the 834th IL debate on this forum, but if a guy is planning to use the gun for PD or for IPSC or IDPA revolver competition, the PC gun is tough to beat. I'm sure the Mountain Gun is nice too, probably has a lighter profile barrel, but the PC is somewhat dehorned, cylinders chamfered for quick reloads, super quick with moon-clips, has the ability to change out the front sight, and is just a great all-around revolver. I would not hesitate to use one for PD.

The .45ACP Mountain Guns are VERY expensive. The 625-3, Model of 1989 bears looking at. They are A LITTLE more reasonably priced--but NOT cheap. It's full lugged, but can be had in 3, 4, or 5 inch versions. The 3 inch would make an excellent CCW. I have a 4 inch which is an EXCELLENT shooter. I target shoot with it and occasionally carry it for SD in a Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake holster...

Good advice Joe. I actually just sold a 625-2 with a 5" barrel to a fellow forum member...it was (is) a great shooter but just a little larger than I wanted for carry. I'd love a 3" or 4" barrel replacement, but the 3" models seem to be even more pricey than the MG! I'll keep hunting...after all the hunt is a large part of the fun for us accumulators!

I have both, along with several other model 25/325/625/1917 handguns.

No bad choices in the S&W .45 acp revolver family. They all shoot great. If I had to limit myself to just one, it would probably be a plain jane 625-3.

Or maybe my V-comp, or maybe just which ever one I'd shot most recently.

I just ordered a 4" Mountain Gun barrel from Midway. It is on back order and should be here sometime next month. They are running $112.00.

I have a 5" Model 625 with a full lug barrel right now. It is a great revolver, but a bit heavy to pack around. Once I get the 4" barrel from Midway, I am going to have it swapped out in place of the 5" one....

I would like to find a 625 Mtn Gun in .45 ACP, but I have a 629 Mtn Gun and a 4" 625PC. Both the 629 and 625 weigh just under 40 oz. I doubt that there would be much if any weight reduction for a 625 Mtn Gun. I am happy with my 625PC. It shoots great, has a great trigger, and an interchangeable front sight. I got rid of the gold bead front sight and replaced it with a black, serrated ramp. Fortunately my 629 Mtn Gun came with a serrated ramp because the sight is pinned.

That's a good idea...I might have to look into the barrel swap option if I can't find what I'm looking for. I just hate to alter these guns that they don't make any more, but if it makes a shooter that you like, then its not a bad option!

I got the new barrel installed and now it carries and shoots like a champ!
