.45 ACP

I have a few bucks burning a hole in my pocket, and I just realized ,

I do not own a .45 revolver.

IT is time to change that.
Please advise what should I look for and how much will it cost?

Tough spot to be in. What are you looking for in a .45? Carry gun; self defense; target shooting; plinking?

These are one of my favorites. There are several to choose from but I would want to know the cylinder throat dimensions. Try to stay around .452". There are some out there as larger as .456" - .457".

I went with the performance center 625. I'm very happy with it. I realize my criteria are not for everyone, but I like the fact that it's new, that it has a 4" barrel, not sure what it's called, but I like the profile and the way the "under lug" (the barrel under the barrel) is cut away, the smooth trigger and the gold bead front sight. The grips are unique, but I simply replaced them with some Hogue grips.

It's a sweet gun and certainly worth your consideration IMHO.

I'd go for a 625-2 Model of 1988 because its the first one of the 625's and has a ramped front sight. Here's mine with Ahrends Cocobolo stocks

Regarding use I don`t NEED anything But I want a good shooter probably 4 inch, and I like the full lug under the barrel.I like the moon glips.

I`m not interested in a concealed carry gun -I have that base well covered.

I have a newer 625 PC. Every trip to the range I like it more and more. Really love the moon clip loading & unloading. Certainly is a welcomed break from chasing empty cases from my 1911. A little expensive to buy the gun but shoots cheap and shoots good.

The least expensive 'new' S&W that will chamber & fire moonclipped .45 ACP ammo is the Governor, SKU 162410 & MSRP $769. I bought mine when they first became available 6/11 for $579 as a bedside .45 ACP revolver. It weighs less than 3/4 the weight of my 4" 625JM and, using the same 'clipped ammo, you can feel some bounce. It will also shoot .45 Schofields, .45 Colts, and 2.5" .410 shot shells. It hits coincident POA/POI at 7-12 yd with 230gr ball .45 ACP and 250 gr Speer Gold Dots alike.

Mine sports the X-frame .500 Magnum grips - the OEM grips are alongside - and sufficient for .45's.

I only own one a 25-2 and I really like it and it's accurate and shooting with moon clips is a blast.

You will be amazed how much ammunition you can burn through using moon clips.
Mine also serves as my bedside companion.

Here's my 4" Heritage .45ACP. It didn't come this way, a trip to Cylinder and Slide resulted in the 4" brl. It likes anything I put in it but I am getting partial to .45Auto Rim. I should have wiped it down before shooting the pic, I just brought it into the house and it hadn't warmed up yet, ergo the cloudy frame.

I consider this the ultimate .45 ACP revolver for target or defense use. It's a 625-2 Model of 1988 with a 5-inch barrel, equipped with a red ramp front sight, traditional cylinder release and Ahrends retro classic stocks. It's been treated to a Class A action job by Nelson Ford, and is probably the smoothest double action revolver I've ever shot.

Wish S&W would bring back the 22-4. And there's nothing wrong with a picture of it in it's natural state.

I would vote for either a vintage 25-2 or the 625-2. Used to own a 25-2 and wish I had kept it.
