I have had fun with this one:

255 Gr. cast 454190 bullet, sized to .454 in FC or RP cases
Rem large pistol primers
5.0 gr. of "Clays".
Use a very light crip over the ogive.
This also shoots well using Hornady FPRN "3D" bullets.
I shoot this load in a SAA and a S&W hand ejector.

8-9 grs of Unique for 240-250 gr hard cast lead. 625 Mt Gun. (fairly stout)

6.5-7 grs HP 38 gives some nice loads also. Meters better also.

i'm going to hijack a little.
same caliber, but looking for about 1k ft/s with a lead 250grn bullet, coming from a 6.5" model 25-15.

I have two loads for the 45 Colt: 9.0gr Unique and ANY weight bullet up to 285gr. That pushes my 270gr LSWCHP at 1000fps from my M25 -7. It will NOT shoot to the sights. I even lowered my rear sight and then some to make them shoot 3" high @ 25 yards. They cycle really well through my Puma in the same caliber. From that firearm, they are more like 1200fps though. I can tell you this, @ 100 yards or under, deadly! Not only that but that .452" bullet makes stuff move around kind of cool!

I also have several loads that give me 1300-1400fps with the 45-270SAA bullet from a Ruger Blackhawk 45 Convertible with a 5 1/2" barrel. They develop 1800fps from the Puma. All of those loads though are much outside SAAMI pressure specifications for the caliber and I won't post them here.

If you want to look them up, get a subscription to loaddata.com and do a search for 45 Colt loads. Brian Pearce wrote an article for Hanloader Magazine in #246 where he experiments with three levels of loads. 14,000psi -standard pressure, 20,000psi - modern double action revolvers such as the Smith 45 Colt models, 32,000psi - Freedom Arms, Ruger, Thompson Center and others.

The loads that develop higher than normal velocities can also be found at John Linebaugh's website. He has some REAL ZINGERS!

p.s. With the Ruger, I can get the sights to regulate to heavier bullets.

Hope this helps.

FOr Colt SAA or copy, 7-8gr under a 250-260gr lead bullet is abotu as good as it gets. For a lighter load, TrailBoss is a nice shooting load that nearly fills the case.

6.1 titegroup with a 250 SWC gives me 800 fps in my 4" 25-15. Some people really hate TG but I have had very good results in many calibers.

Rule 3 & Smith Crazy nailed it, at least according to the powders I use.

8 ~ 9 grains of Unique gives you 8 ~ 9 hundred fps. That's symmetry! :)

I also like 7 ~ 7.5g W231/HP38 for a similar but slightly slower load.

Good shooting. :)

I like the Missouri Bullet Co. RNFP's with Unique or HP38 for light loads. I was using the 250gn but they seemed a little too much for the steel plates. Loaded some 200gn but haven's had a chance to try them yet.

6.0 gr Bullseye, AA#2, or Red Dot. 7.0 gr W231 or HP38. 8.0-8.5 gr Unique. All are accurate in my 45 colts (Redhawk, Blackhawk, 25-5, Anaconda, 45-colt-caliber Raging Bull) with 255gr SWC or 200gr SWC normally used for 45acp.

200 gr lswc sized to .454, cci lp primer, case filled with blackpowder to the bottom of the bullet with no air space.Shoots nice tight groups from my 3rd gen saa.Poa is poi at 25 yards.Mild recoil and a lot of fun.If you aren't getting good groups from that saa using .452 diameter bullets,go with .454s.

I have used W231, AA#5, HS-6 and TrailBoss in my .45 Colt ammo and all worked as they should. I like HS-6 for "hot loads" and W231 for everything else.

One of my favorite loads is a 255gr LSWC over 7.2gr W231.

I have been loading for the colt for many years, the best load that I have ever used is a 250 gr. Cast lead with 19 gr. Of h4227 or imr 4227 and a mag primer. This powder needs a mag primer to completely burn. This is a nice load with plenty of power and very accurate and safe in SA guns. But it is a max. Load. For a lighter load back it off to 17 gr.
