local pd just replaced 4500TSW(unsure of exact model number) with glocks. Supervisor did not recommend puchase of used Smith. Said they had some parts failure, and another department was having cracks appear around ejection port. Unknown what they will sell for. What do you all think. thanks

I would want to know more. It doesn't sound like he was very specific.

Lacking any creditable evidence, I would take it for what it is - a story, maybe true in his particular case, maybe not. If I wanted to buy one of the guns, I would judge its condition/price myself and decide accordingly.

I do not have a 45xx TSW gun, but my older 3rd-generation .45 S&W autos have been very serviceable. A couple of them are police trade-ins. My biggest expense has been replacing the stocks on one, which were pretty scuffed up, and a magazine floor plate, which was cracked - probably from dropping on a hard floor when loaded. One heavily used mag I received lacked a follower, so now it has a new spring and the new black follower in a mag that says to use only a yellow one.

I would find out what the price is good and if so and if I wanted one, and the one that I was buying exhibited no problems - I would get one. IMHO police trade outs more often have to do with available cash, a new correct "law enforcement caliber of the day", and someone's desire for new toys rather than any defect in the replaced gun. Of course there must be a smokescreen or two to justify the swap out to the clueless politicians.

I've heard the cracked frame/slide/ejection port/trigger guard/barrel bushing/hammer tension return arm assembly story from so many folks, many of them cops, that I think they just trade around the same excuses to explain away the real reason behind trading in all their 3rd Generation pistols - they just ain't cool anymore.

Let them jump on the DAO bandwagon. That just frees up more DA/SA for us. My favorite. I'm not trying to start an argument. I may be a SA fan if I ever get a 1911. Love those triggers!

The 45xx series pistols are among the most underated pistols of all time.

The only complaints you will hear is that they are too heavy.

I have never heard about any frame cracking on the 45xx, but they are mechanical things. Even sigs (gasp) have well documented issues with frame cracking.

Most likely if you replace the springs you will probably end up with one of those guns you won't sell (or if you do you really regret it).

Check the gun auction sites to see what a 4506 goes for, or search 4506, 4566, 4586 to find out some more on their reputation.

I've known of Glock 29 frames to crack also...

Still, I'm highly skeptical of 4506s cracking -- as in truly cracking -- anywhere, especially the ejection port.

Now, I have seen some Smiths with weird pitting -- but it clearly didn't weaken the frame. Of course, some anal-retentive bean counter might call it that, but it wasn't a true crack...except maybe in the eyes of a Smith hater...

It sounds like a Glock "plant" to me...

I carry a 4563 every day. Love it. Quit carrying a Sig 220 to go back to the Smith. My cousin works in LA. Officers are not allowed to carry their personally owned Glock 45's anymore due to problems of some sort. He didnt know. He carries a 4506. We carry 230 gr Hydra-shoks in ours.

Thanks for input. Will find out mod. no. & price in about 7-10 days.

Typical cop baloney. Jump on the used S&W if the condition and price is right!

WE have purchased several thousand police trades of all brands. I have never seen A cracked frame.

I HAVE PURCHASED A FEW OF THESE TRADE INS, TRY TO FIND A NICE ONE. AND ENJOY I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM, THEY JUST KEEP BLASING AWAY..I THINK ALL 3RD GEN PISTOLS WERE WAY OVER ENG.

Been carrying my 4516-1 since buying it. Yes, it's heavy but with a good holster it's not that noticeable. For $375 with 2 mags the price was right. I've since picked up a blue box with insert, oil paper and extra mag. That set me back $40 and I'm still happy!
